PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Medication Access Technician reports directly to the Director of Pharmacy and is responsible for obtaining approval from insurance companies or healthcare payers, including but not limited to Patient Assistance Programs, for medications that require prior authorization. This position involves completing insurance requirements, collecting information from healthcare providers, and ensuring timely access to prescribed medications.

The Medication Access Technician also works as a registered pharmacy technician and covers as needed at all locations

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Prior authorization/patient assistance program coordination

  • Review medication prescriptions that require prior authorization, understanding insurance formularies and coverage criteria for different medications.
  • Gather and organize necessary medical records, clinical documentation, and other supporting materials required for the prior authorization process.
  • Complete and submit prior authorization requests to insurance companies, ensuring all required information is included. Follow up with insurers to track the status of pending authorizations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to obtain missing information, clarification, or supporting documentation or lab work needed for successful authorization.
  • Communicate with patients regarding the status of prior authorization requests, explaining the process, potential delays, and alternatives if authorization is denied.
  • Communicate with providers and their care team regarding denials so the care team can provide follow up information and plan of treatment changes to patient.

Pharmacy Technician duties:

  • Float to FoundCare locations for coverage as needed (reliable transportation required)
  • Greets and receives customers and provides assistance by explaining and clarifying prescriptions, answering non-clinical queries, providing assistance in locating pharmacy items etc.
  • Assists the Registered Pharmacist in providing and dispensing medication and other health care products to patients.
  • Receives written prescriptions or requests for prescription refills from patients and prescriptions sent electronically.
  • Performs routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication for patients, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles.
  • Consults the Director of Pharmacy and /or Registered Pharmacist and refers any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist.
  • Verifies information on the prescription is complete and accurate.
  • Prepares the prescription by retrieving, counting, pouring, weighing, measuring and sometimes mixing the medication.
  • Completes transactions at point-of-sale, including cash handling transactions.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance procedures, and prior authorization protocols.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) designation or equivalent certification.
  • Extensive experience working as a pharmacy technician, preferably in various settings (retail, hospital, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with healthcare providers, insurance companies, and patients effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for managing documentation and tracking multiple authorizations simultaneously.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Empathy, patience, and a proactive approach to patient advocacy and support.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in pharmacy operations
  • Maintain client and family confidentiality
  • Comply with FoundCare’s policies and procedures
  • Assist with the agency fundraising and community outreach activities as requested, including promoting events, selling tickets, soliciting donations, and other tasks to support events
  • Other duties as assigned including but not limited to those related to state of emergencies

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, with or without the use of an interpreter
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services
  • Clear understanding that FoundCare provides information on educating individuals on safer sex practices, which would include but not limited to, exposure to explicit language, explicit printed material, and descriptions of explicit sexual activities as part of the agency’s mission in the prevention and transmission of HIV disease.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to see distinctions in colors and shapes
  • Ability to endure short, intermittent, and/or long periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties
  • Ability to travel to all FoundCare offices and off-site locations and attend meetings, workshops, seminars plus travel to other FoundCare departments and conference rooms
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 25 pounds or less over periods of 100 yards
  • Accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, e.g. pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboard, telephone, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduate or GED minimum
  • Possess at least 3 years of pharmacy technician experience.
  • Possess at least 2 years of pharmacy prior authorization direct experience.
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations.
  • Current Florida licensure as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
