Distinguishing Features of the Position (Summary)

Performs technical work in preventive maintenance and/or repair of assigned county wide Plumbing systems. Duties include but not limited to monitor and adjust the full range of plumbing systems as well as hands-on work repairing plumbing water, sewer, gas, heating, septic systems and associated fixtures for commercial and industrial structure. Positions in this class perform routine maintenance and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer maintenance questions; and maintain repair documents and records.


Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.


Monitor and adjust the full range of plumbing systems as well as hands-on work repairing plumbing water, sewer, gas, heating, septic systems and associated fixtures for commercial and industrial buildings.


Locate, repair or replace broken water supply lines or drainage lines, clogged drains, faucets, etc....


Respond to, diagnose, and resolve plumbing emergencies; perform routine inspections of plumbing and drainage systems.


Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and safety practices; ability to read and follow blueprints and rough drawings to assess or plan plumbing installations and layouts.


Responsible for working with vendors on plumbing systems and assist on commissioning of new building plumbing systems.


Inspects plumbing systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.


Maintains assigned inventory of all plumbing systems; requests quotes for needed services, materials, equipment, and supplies.


Assists maintenance personnel with problems and ensures timely completion of work; works with power tools in a safe manner, helps with work orders requested, keeps work areas clean.


Provides assistance and information to employees, foreman, managers, vendors, local businesses, and/or other interested parties regarding assigned plumbing functions.


Maintains tools and machinery in good condition and uses all tools carefully and as instructed; may be expected to operate heavy equipment on occasion.


Responsible for assigned week of emergency after hour calls and stand-by duties.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED; must have Apprentice Registration with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners supplemented by five (5) years of experience performing plumbing duties; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Tradesman Plumber-Limited or Journeyman Plumber preferred. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.


Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.


Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, flammable liquids and high noise levels.
