Job Title: Executive Director of External Affairs & Advancement

Start Date: July 1 - June 30

Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday Duration: 12 months


Description: The Director of External Affairs and Advancement fulfills a critical leadership role in the strategic growth and success of Codman Academy Charter Public School and Codman Academy Foundation by managing key external relationships. The Director of External Affairs and Advancement develops and executes communications, marketing and fundraising plans and strategies, with an emphasis on establishing connections between the school and key stakeholders. The Director also facilitates the Head of School’s internal and external communications and public relations initiatives. Additionally, as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director plays a critical role in the strategic identification and development of partnerships, and serves as a key liaison to the Board of Directors of the school and foundation.


Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Promote awareness and support for the school by directing all aspects of marketing and communications, from direct mail, to digital marketing, including website and social media, to print collateral, including annual reports and newsletters.

  • Enhance awareness and support for the school via events, and coordinate management involvement with community groups, agencies, government and elected officials, and other interested parties.

  • Develop and execute fundraising plans for individuals, foundations, community groups, federal and state grants, and donor advised funds.

  • Supervise Grant writer.

  • Lead annual benefit special event, including solicitation of sponsorships.

  • Develop, implement and manage school branding and marketing plans and objectives.

  • Provide strategic advice and counsel to the Head of School in the identification and development of key external partnerships, and other organizational priorities.

  • Primary staff person for school and foundation boards.

RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and positive manner with all contacts.

  • Greet all persons with respect and courtesy in person and on the phone.

  • Deliver service in a non-judgmental manner that is sensitive and respectful.

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS DESIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher;

  • 5-7 years of increasing responsibility in fundraising, with success in personal solicitations and in building long-term relationships with donors, prospects and volunteers;

  • Ability to build, lead and expand a comprehensive philanthropy program;

  • Track record with successful capital campaigns;

  • Ability to be a strategic and management partner with volunteer leadership, the Head of School and other organizational leadership;

  • Capability to play an active role in strategic planning and implementation as part of a senior management team;

  • Ability to build, manage, motivate and lead a team to achieve high goals and ensure accountability;

  • Proven success with cultivation and stewardship of high-level donors;

  • Entrepreneurial spirit with ability to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones;

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills;

  • A commitment to the organization’s mission and the ability to effectively communicate to a wide range of audiences;

  • Experience leading fundraising programs of family-based social and/or educational organizations in Boston and/or Massachusetts is a plus.

  • Experience with Network for Good CRM is a plus.
