This role is onsite full time and based in Bardstown, Kentucky.

What the Role Is

The R&D/Innovation Lab Technician will support the functions of the R&D/Innovation Lab by using precision measuring instruments and complex testing equipment to assist with laboratory projects and conduct routine lab functions.

How You Will Spend Your Time?

  • Execute Program Barrel Projects: prepare samples for tasting by filtering and proofing. Creating and labeling of sales sample sets. Requesting replacement barrels as needed and keeping the program barrel spreadsheet up to date. Ensure that the samples are completed on time.
  • Assist with sensory evaluations of beverages to ensure that flavors meet specifications or to select samples with specific characteristics (i.e. shelf-life testing, triangle testing, program barrel tasting).
  • Prepare prototype samples as directed by the Innovation Manager.
  • Perform laboratory tests as directed by the Innovation Manager.
  • Conduct routine and non-routine analyses of incoming flavors and check those results against the provided specifications.
  • Develop verbal and written reports to communicate results of tests completed.
  • Send samples for third party testing such as nutritional analyses, Ethyl Carbamate (EC), geosmin, fusel oils, etc. as needed.
  • Work with International Team and Export Bulk Coordinator to have samples tested and provide updated documentation for those products as needed.
  • Maintain the repository for documents to support the international team proactively updating information including but not limited to certificates of analysis and certificates of ingredients & manufacture.
  • Perform document control activities and develop standard operating procedures as needed.
  • Ensure the lab operating supplies stock is well maintained.
  • Maintain laboratory instruments or equipment in good working order which includes scheduling instruments or equipment for routine maintenance or sending units our for same.
  • Ordering of lab supplies as needed, i.e. solutions, pipettes, tasting cups, etc.
  • Foster a more organized and productive working environment by maintaining 5S in the laboratory.
  • Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams and by conducting laboratory or plant safety audits.

Who You Are…

  • Associate’s degree in Research & Development, Chemistry or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in laboratory work, specifically with using weights/measures for mathematical and laboratory operations to support research projects
  • Proficient computer skills with experience utilizing Microsoft Office software.
  • Complex Problem Solving; identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  • Excellent mathematic, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Detail oriented, organized, and time-bound with competence in both written and verbal communication
  • Disciplined self-starter capable of managing various tasks on a routine basis and meeting deadlines

Valued but not Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical or related field
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience in a distilled spirits industry

Physical Requirements

While performing duties of job, employee is frequently required to stand; extensive walking; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, and use of computer; reach with hands and arms. Will be required to climb stairs and may be required to climb ladders. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
