@Orchard LLC is actively seeking to engage an experienced Native Hawaiian Culture Projects Specialist in support of NOAA’s Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM). The work is located at the PMNM site in Honolulu, HI. The selected individual will complete Native Hawaiian cultural projects and related tasks at the Honolulu, HI, site, or at offsite and remote locations as required.

As the Native Hawaiian Culture Projects Specialist, you will:
  • Develop, coordinate, manage, and evaluate the site’s Native Hawaiian Program.
  • Contribute to the coordination and support of leadership, staff, co-managing agencies, and other partner organizations in implementing the strategies and activities related to Native Hawaiian cultural access, research, education, partnerships, and overall integration of Native Hawaiian perspectives into the daily management of the site.
  • Assist with the development of new partnerships with the Native Hawaiian community and liaisons with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
  • Assist with the coordination and planning of trips to the monument.
  • Coordinate among partner agencies in the development and implementation of the Native Hawaiian Plan.
  • Assist with administrative tasks related [NN1] to the Native Hawaiian Program.
  • Develop and implement a Native Hawaiian in-reach program for PMNM staff.
  • Assist in field camp and training activities that integrate Western Science and traditional Native Hawaiian methodologies.
  • Obtain and maintain status as a NOAA Diver.
  • Assist with education and outreach events, public meetings, etc.
  • Coordinate & provide pre-access permit briefings to PMNM permittees and participants prior to his/her access to PMNM, with support from other Co-Managers. Support Section 106 compliance for permits as needed.

Your background will include the following.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with an emphasis in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language, Botany, Biology, Natural Resource Management, or related field. (A Bachelor’s Degree with cultural training from a recognized practitioner who is knowledgeable in a Native Hawaiian practice, discipline, or tradition may substitute for the above emphasis).
  • Five to seven (5-7) years of experience working with Native Hawaiian communities and natural resource management.
  • Experience in public speaking, oral presentations, and developing visual presentations in a cultural context. Advanced knowledge of Native Hawaiian history, culture, and traditional resource management.
  • Ability to communicate in the Hawaiian language.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with common personal computer office software.
  • In addition, certification and proficiency in scuba diving, with at least three (3) years of experience as a diver.
