Job Overview: Allen Koch's client is seeking a forward-thinking, proactive, entrepreneurial-spirited Director of Finance to help the organization grow to from a small to mid-side, nationwide nonprofit and expand into Canada. The Director of Finance serves as a member of the senior leadership team, leading the financial management of the organization, ensuring its financial health and sustainability. Our desired candidate proactively and with an entrepreneurial-spirit delivers financial reports, budgets, forecasts, analysis, and strategy recommendations to fellow senior leaders and the board of directors that help the charity grow, expand and increase its efficiencies. This position oversees all financial management, budgeting and forecasting, strategic planning and leadership, board relations and reporting, tax filing and compliance, and payroll & employee benefits. This position is also responsible for company insurance, and state registration requirements. This position supervises one or more Finance Clerks and/or Donor Care Coordinators.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management
Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organizations mission and goals
Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems
Prepare and present financial reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, providing analysis and recommendations, as needed
Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements
Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers
Budgeting and Forecasting
Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process, working closely with program managers and other stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets
Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis to the Executive Director and Board of Directors
Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term financial planning and decision-making
Strategic Planning and Leadership
Work closely with the Executive Director and senior leaders to develop and implement strategic plans and goals that support the organizations mission and vision
Lead the Finance Committee, collaborating with other committee members to provide strategic financial guidance and support to the organization
Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development
Collaborate with other senior leaders to develop and implement strategies that support the organizations mission and goals
Board Relations and Reporting
Report on the financial performance of the organization to the Board of Directors, including regular updates on budget performance, forecasts, and financial risks and opportunities
Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the organizations values and strategic goals
Represent the organization at internal and external events and meetings, providing financial guidance and support as needed
Tax Filing and Compliance
Oversee all tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations
Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements
Company Insurance
Manage insurance policies for the organization.
Payroll & Employee Benefits
Manage payroll, employee benefits payments, and state registrations for remote working employees for tax, unemployment and workers comp etc.
Lead the annually bidding and open enrollment processes for the employee benefit plans via our broker (medical, dental, vision, 403b retirement fund, etc.)
Requirements
Education
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; MBA or CPA strongly preferred At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management required
- Experience in nonprofit accounting rules highly desired
Proven track record of successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, and overseeing financial reporting and compliance Strong leadership and management skills, with experience building and leading high-performing teams Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders
Passion for the mission and work of the organization
Passionate interest in mentoring others and working as a team
Skills
Strong finance, accounting, payroll and bookkeeping skills required -both at a micro and macro level, with demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret financials, budgets and trends in order to proactively make recommendations.
- Experience working in the accounting software system, Intacct, highly desired
Project management, strategic planning, and decision making skills with attention to detail.
Strong analytical skills to configure data fields, analyze and interpret data, and make recommendations.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task, prioritize work and manage deadlines. Self-motivator who maintains confidentiality and professionalism.
Proficiency using HR software/employment portals, such as Paylocity, highly desired.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Computer savvy using Microsoft Office and G-Suite products, and CRM systems, such as Hubspot People management and supervisory skills and abilities.
Abilities
Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 5 pounds or less 5% of the workday
Must be able stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl 5% or less of the workday
Must be able to talk, see, hear, concentrate, think, learn and reason for all of the workday
Must be able to sit and walk or otherwise move around for prolonged periods throughout the workday. Must be able to use a keyboard and do manual tasks for prolonged periods throughout the workday.
Occasional overnight travel to a few meetings a year may be required.
Work Environment
Work is performed indoors in a climate-controlled, home office and/or office environment.
