Title: Youth Recreation Specialist

Salary: $17.33 per hour

Supervisor: Youth Services Coordinator

Status: Non-Exempt, Part Time, Temporary (End date: August 2024)

Schedule: Monday 9am-1pm, Tuesday – Friday 3-9pm (28 hours per week)

 

*Please note in July and August, hours will increase, and Tuesday – Friday shifts may start at 1pm.

 

Function:

The Youth Recreation Specialist will work with youth, ages 11 – 18, within the Dutchess County community to provide recreation and enrichment activities for youth who attend the Teen Resource Activity Center (TRAC) within the Family Partnership Center. The Youth Recreation Specialist will work with the TRAC team to plan and implement activities that help develop athletic, creative, academic, workforce and social skills.

 

The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with middle and high school aged youth and will enthusiastically support Family Services’ mission and statement of values.

Position Requirements:

  • A passion for working with middle and high school youth.
  • Must be able to pass all background checks for work with youth.
  • Connection to the City of Poughkeepsie Community as well as the larger Dutchess County Community.
  • Ability to work irregular/flexible hours.
  • High School diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years’ direct experience working with youth required.
  • Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in human services or related field such as sociology and social work preferred.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Upon hiring, must be able to complete online Positive Youth Development 101 training.
  • Upon hiring, must complete Health Foundations and Mandated Reporter training administered by OCFS.
  • Must be onsite during program operating hours.
  • Established cell phone and willing to use for work with effective coverage for Dutchess County (will be reimbursed).
  • Must be reachable outside of office hours if needed.
  • Possess valid driver’s license.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with the Microsoft Office suite.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Coordinator, assist in planning and implementation of activities that engage middle and high school youth including athletic, creative, academic, workforce and social skills development activities.
  • In collaboration with Youth Services Leadership, coordinate and implement events such as basketball clinics, field trips, guest speakers and community service projects.
  • Conduct outreach in the community to encourage youth participation in the Teen Resource Activity Center.
  • Ensure the respectful treatment of property, keeping the spaces used by the program clean and organized, and restoring rooms at the conclusion of daily program activities.
  • Making certain youth adhere to behavior standards outlined in the youth behavior code.
  • Complete all administrative tasks as assigned on a timely basis.
  • Maintain active and ongoing communication with supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain community connections.
  • Mediate conflicts that could result in escalation and/or violence.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with program funders and stakeholders.
  • Participate in ongoing training.
  • Other duties as assigned based upon needs of the program.

 

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision of children.
  • Awareness and experience with basketball clinics/games/tournaments is a plus.
  • Cultural competence and ability to relate to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Community Organizing abilities.
  • Crisis Management and trauma-informed practices.
  • Compassion and empathy for participants’ needs and possess strong advocacy skills.
  • Knowledge of public, private and community agencies that may be utilized to serve participants of the program.
  • Aptitude for completing administrative tasks and ‘out of the box’ thinking and resourcefulness.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written required.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.

 

Work Environment – This position is based at the Family Partnership Center in Poughkeepsie. Local travel will be required when supervising youth on field trips.
