Position: Assistant Teacher/ Support staff

Full time starting wage $14.00

Monday through Friday 7:30AM-12:30PM


Delegation of Authority: As a Food Service/Float employee, you are delegated the authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties. The Food Service/Float employee is directly supervised by the Center Director/Administrator. In the absence of the Center Director/Administrator, the Assistant Director(s) are responsible for supervision of Program staff. Good Shepherd's Executive Director is responsible to oversee overall operations of Center Programs.


Position Summary: The primary purpose of your job is to ensure that the children are served the appropriate meals and snacks each day. In addition, you are responsible for relieving staff during breaks and for filling in for staff that may be absent.


Extent of Position Description: Every effort has been made to keep the position description as complete as possible. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or is a logical assignment to the position.


Essential Functions:


The Food Service/Float shall be qualified as either an Assistant Teacher or Teacher as per the job descriptions for those positions. In addition to the position description of Assistant Teacher or Teacher, the Food Service/Float shall be assigned the following functions:


  1. Ensures that the children are served meals/snacks at Program scheduled

food service times.

  1. Ensures that children receive the proper amounts and types of foods for each meal/snack according to DPI guidelines.
  2. Assists with menu preparation.
  3. Ensures that foods are kept at State mandated temperatures prior to serving.
  4. Are required to do some baking and food preparation for breakfasts and snacks.
  5. Shall keep the kitchen clean at all times. All food surfaces, inside of the refrigerator, stove top and warming unit must be wiped down on a daily basis.
  6. Ensures that thermometers are kept in the refrigerator and freezer and that the unit is kept at State mandated temperatures.
  7. Ensures that food is covered when refrigerated.
  8. Ensures that foods not requiring refrigeration shall be stored in metal, glass or food-grade plastic containers with tight-fighting covers and shall be dated and labeled.
  9. Shall store dry foods in metal, glass or food grade plastic containers with tight-fitting covers and shall date and label those containers.
  10. Shall store poison and toxic materials, such as cleaning supplies, in cabinets used for no other purpose and which are inaccessible to children. Cabinets shall be labeled.
  11. Shall wash raw fruits and vegetables before serving or cooking.
  12. Shall discard food returned from individual plates or from dining tables.
  13. Shall freeze or discard leftover prepared food which has not been served within 36 hours of the time it was prepared. Shall label and date any food that shall be frozen.
  14. Shall wash hands with soap and running water before and after handling food. Hands shall be dried with single use towel.
  15. Single use disposable gloves shall be worn when handling food.
  16. Shall keep the Director informed of needed kitchen supplies or foods.
  17. Shall ensure that all kitchen utensils are properly stored in areas that are clean and sanitary.
  18. Shall bring dishes that have been used to the kitchen at the Good Shepherd Home for proper cleaning and disinfection.
  19. Shall pick-up food and clean dishes from the Good Shepherd Home kitchen.
  20. Shall prepare snacks for all Center Programs including school-aged programs.
  21. Shall wear a hair net or properly restrain hair when working with food.
  22. Shall record on the DPI form the number of children being served at each meal/snack.
  23. Shall assist teachers/assistant teachers as needed.
  24. Will remain flexible to serve as a classroom assistant teacher/teacher if needed in the absence of a staff person.
  25. Shall assist in ensuring that the Center stays clean.
