About the Role

Bonhams is looking for an ambitious and proactive Cataloguer to work with our New York based Post-War & Contemporary Art Department. This role plays an integral part in preparing artworks for sale, cataloguing, arranging photography, research, and condition reporting. In addition, it provides support to specialist business getting teams by assembling proposals and selling documents as assigned.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible for all cataloguing and research, working closely with Photography, Operations and Marketing departments to ensure flawless sale activity and maintenance of sale related deadlines, collaborating with the Sale Coordinator to ensure timely preparation of artworks prior to catalogue deadline.

 

Under the guidance of the Head of Sale, you will assess artworks for authenticity and condition issues on arrival, catalogue, coordinate photography, and research for public and private sales, fulfilling due diligence using libraries, online databases, liaising with artists’ studios, estates, galleries, and outside experts, ensuring research folders are complete for each artwork prior to catalogue deadline. You will prepare essays and assist with catalogue production as assigned.


You will assist with preparing proposals, inputting data from appraisals attended by department Specialists, and selling documents as required by the global team.

 

The above will apply for all Post War & Contemporary artworks consigned to New York sales as well as those consigned for Los Angeles, London and Hong Kong sales that are consigned through the New York offices.


In addition to the tasks and responsibilities listed, you may be required to perform other duties as assigned by your Manager.


Required Skills

  • BA in Art History including one or more years' experience in an auction house setting
  • Extremely trustworthy and respectful of confidentiality in professional settings
  • High level attention to detail and relevant expertise
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft/Outlook and database programmes
  • Positive and proactive, with a passion for fine art and auction field
