Job Title: Preschool Lead Teacher

DSL Team: Programs - ECE

Reports to: Childcare Director

Status: FT

Hours: 30-40 hrs/wk


Overview:


The Preschool Lead Teacher is responsible for developing and maintaining a safe and nurturing environment that facilitates the development of skills across all domains for preschool age children with Down syndrome.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Plan classroom activities and lessons to address developmental needs of all students with opportunities for differentiated learning from prescribed curriculum
  • Prepare the space and staff
  • Implement and lead classroom activities

Duties:


Utilize adaptations and modifications of teaching methods, materials or the learning environment and utilize instructional strategies designed for young students with Down syndrome.

Implement the prescribed curriculum and/or learning program.

Follow all practices as outlined by childcare regulations.

Follow all practices and procedures as outlines for employment at DSL.

Work with Childcare Director and DSL staff to ensure a learning environment that is safe, clean and accessible to all students.

Provide direction and guidance to classroom assistants that facilitates mutual respect and good working relationships.

Work collaboratively with staff, therapists and provider specialists to help students achieve their learning goals.

Lead classroom activities as scheduled.

Actively work directly with children 1:1, in pairs, small and whole groups to facilitate their learning goals.

Help create and maintain a learning environment that promotes appropriate social-communication skills.

Develop and maintain positive and respectful relationships with students and their caregivers.

Maintain an interactive, orderly and structured environment that meets students' sensory needs and styles.

Implement each student's learning plan (and behavioral plan as dictated).

Maintain student records, including progress and assessments as needed.

Maintain daily and weekly communications with students' caregivers (e.g. verbal and written daily progress, summary of weekly activities, copy of monthly program plan).

Attend scheduled progress meetings with caregivers.

Respond to caregiver-initiated communication requests in a timely manner.

Assist in documentation of progress and student activities.



Qualifications: Certifications, Education, Experience, and Skills


  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and/or Special Education or an Associate's Degree in Child Development and two years experience. (30 hrs/week)
  • Preferred: Current Kentucky Teaching Certificate in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE). (40 hrs/week)
  • Experience in a child-care or preschool classroom setting
  • Complete 15 hours of professional development annually and implement what you have learned back into the classroom
  • Update TB skin test every two years
  • Complete a professional development plan with the director annually
  • Complete a staff evaluation with the director annually
  • Complete CPR/First Aid certification every two years (if required by director)
  • Complete the 1.5 hour Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma Training in the first year of hire
  • Complete 6 hours of Orientation in the first 90 days of hire
