Job Title: Preschool Assistant Teacher

DSL Team: Programs - ECE

Reports to: Childcare Director

Status: FT

Hours: 30 hrs/wk


Overview:

The assistant teacher will work in partnership with the lead teacher to prepare and implement a variety of daily activities which include supervising and educating children with Down syndrome, maintaining a safe and nurturing learning environment, as well as, collecting information for and implementing each student's learning plan.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Utilize planned classroom activities and lessons to address developmental needs of all students with opportunities for differentiated learning from prescribed curriculum
  • Assist in preparing the space and materials
  • Support the implementation of classroom activities

Duties:


  • Assist the lead teacher in lesson and learning activity preparation and implementation.
  • Follow all practices as outlined by childcare regulations.
  • Follow all practices and procedures as outlines for employment at DSL.
  • Work with the lead teacher, childcare director and DSL staff to ensure a learning environment that is safe, clean and accessible to all students.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, therapists and provider specialists to help students achieve their learning goals.
  • Actively work directly with children 1:1, in pairs, small and whole groups to facilitate their learning goals.
  • Help create and maintain a learning environment that promotes appropriate social-communication skills.
  • Develop and maintain positive and respectful relationships with students and their caregivers.
  • Help maintain an interactive, orderly and structured environment that meets students' sensory needs and styles.
  • Implement each student's learning plan (and behavioral plan as dictated).
  • Assist in documentation of progress and student activities. Implement each student's learning plan (and behavioral plan as dictated).
  • Maintain student records, including progress and assessments as needed.
  • Maintain daily and weekly communications with students' caregivers (e.g. verbal and written daily progress, summary of weekly activities, copy of monthly program plan).
  • Attend scheduled progress meetings with caregivers.
  • Respond to caregiver-initiated communication requests in a timely manner.
  • Assist in documentation of progress and student activities.


Qualifications: Certifications, Education, Experience, and Skills


  • Required: High School diploma with childcare experience
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • Complete the National Background Check Program for Kentucky and any out of state background checks and Child Abuse and Neglect check
  • Experience in a child-care or preschool classroom setting
  • Complete 15 hours of professional development annually and implement what you have learned back into the classroom
  • Update TB skin test every two years
  • Complete a professional development plan with the director annually
  • Complete a staff evaluation with the director annually
  • Complete CPR/First Aid certification every two years (if required by director)
  • Complete the 1.5 hour Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma Training in the first year of hire
  • Complete 6 hours of Orientation in the first 90 days of hire
