Boston, United States Community Servings Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

Job Description

Job Title: Study Coordinator Reports To: Senior Research Project Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Department: Policy

Labor Status: Non-union Approved By/Date: 6/20/2024

This is contract opening funded by a grant through November 30, 2025.

Community Servings' mission is to actively engage the community to provide medically tailored, nutritious, scratch-made meals to chronically and critically ill individuals and their families. In addition, we are committed to prioritizing racial and economic justice and health equity in all our programs and business practices.

We are a dynamic and fast-growing agency at the forefront of the "Food is Medicine" field, providing over 1M medically tailored meals annually to clients and their families experiencing illness and food insecurity in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In addition, our work strongly focuses on supporting the regional local food system, delivering high-quality nutrition education to the community, and hosting an on-site food-service workforce development program. Over the past 34 years, the agency has provided 13M+ free, scratch-made meals.

We are seeking an independent contractor who will oversee the execution of study protocols, including:

  • recruitment/enrollment, executing study procedures, collecting and maintaining data, tracking and reporting, and ensuring quality and accuracy across a variety of therapeutic areas and protocols of varied complexity.

The ideal candidate will be based in proximity to Boston/Greater Boston for periodic meetings. The position can otherwise be fully remote, hybrid, or onsite at Community Servings’ office in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.

STUDY SUMMARY

This research project, Food as Medicine for HIV: A randomized trial of medically tailored meals and lifestyle intervention, is a community-based randomized clinical trial (RCT) of a medically tailored meal (MTM) and intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) for people with HIV (PWH), food insecurity, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) or high risk for diabetes. The study spans five years including 2.5 years of patient enrollment, 3.5 years of MTM or a usual care and ILI intervention, and qualitative and further quantitative data analysis. The study is projected to conclude in November of 2025.

The usual care consists of 12 months of MTM, consisting of a weekly delivery of 10 ready-to-eat meals, along with currently offered telephone-based nutrition assessments and education. The MTM ILI intervention recipients will receive usual care along with a 20-session telephone lifestyle intervention change program designed to complement the period of meal delivery and prepare for the period after meal delivery with behavioral and skill-building approaches to sustain the benefit of the intervention. The 20-session lifestyle intervention is targeted to the needs of PWH with T2DM experiencing food insecurity, with an emphasis on improving glycemic control and weight loss. The intervention will have a primary focus on diet quality and reducing calorie intake to promote weight loss. Outcomes at 12 and 18 months include HbA1c, weight loss, and patient-reported outcomes.

The study is being led by Dr. Seth Berkowitz, a clinician and physician at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and a leading expert on the association between food insecurity, poor health outcomes, and high healthcare costs. The Lifestyle Intervention (LI) has been developed by Linda Delahanty, MS, RD, Director of Nutritional and Behavioral Research at Mass. General Hospital, an exceptionally experienced lifestyle intervention investigator, and one of the architects of the Look AHEAD lifestyle intervention. Delahanty will work closely with the Community Servings Research Dietitian to develop and train on the delivery of the LI.
