Bus Aide Substitute

Overview
Under the supervision of the Bus Driver, possess the ability and willingness to assist in various areas as assigned. Primary duties will be to ensure the health and safety of the children on the bus.
Key Areas of Responsibility on the Bus
1. Assists the bus driver to ensure the safety and well-being of children by providing direct supervision and actively engaging with children. Attend 4 hours of required training before starting work on the bus.
2. Ensures that every child is signed in and out on the Daily Bus Sign In/Sign Out form by the parent or an authorized individual. Uses this form to track the number of children on the bus. Makes sure forms are properly filled out and turned into the Office Manager each Monday morning for the previous week’s logs.
3. As trained, properly utilizes seat harnesses, ensuring that children are properly secured before the bus in in motion as well as load and unload children safely from the bus, counting them through the Daily Children Sign In/Out Form and the Child Transportation Exception Report.
4. Maintains accountability on the bus always. Monitors all children and ensure that they are released to authorized persons only. Performs final check of bus at the end of every route by placing the pigtails on the inside of the back widow of the bus, confirming that there are not children left behind in the bus.
5. Upon arrival at the center, counts children independently of the bus driver before children are unloaded off the bus. After unloading, remains on the bus until receiving a signal indicating that all children have been accounted for.
6. Walks down the aisle, independently of other staff, looking left and right, touching every seat bottom and car seat, looking in each seat, as well as look under the seats for children.
7. Before the bus is moved from the loading zone, follows the Post Trip Inspection procedure.
8. Promotes a bus where interactions are positive, warm, caring, and respectful of children.
9. Follows the lead of the children by demonstrating an awareness of and responsiveness to children’s emotional, physical and educational needs; allowing and encouraging freedom of expression.
10. As trained, promotes children’s physical, social/emotional, cognitive, and language development using the assigned curriculum and the agency’s School Readiness Plan in a culturally appropriate way as feasible on the bus.
11. Provides clear behavioral expectations and use appropriate and positive methods to prevent and redirect misbehavior.
12. Handles disciplinary issues immediately and appropriately without yelling at or threatening children.
13. As trained, provides a good language model by using correct grammar, voice level, and clear speech.
14. As trained, assists with the implementation of appropriate learning activities for special needs children with IFSPs/IEPs while they are on the bus.
15. Takes primary responsibility for keeping the bus clean and sanitized using the classroom sanitizing solution as explained in Centro’s Transportation Manual. Folds all blankets/coats and cleanup all the trash to prepare for the next trip.
16. Fills out child incident reports as they occur on the bus. Turns in these forms in to the child’s Family Service Specialist.
17. Demonstrates proficiency in executing emergency evacuation procedures as explained in Centro’s Transportation Manual.
18. Knows the location of emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire blanket, first aid kit, body fluid clean-up kit, etc.
19. Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to families and children.
20. Fulfills other duties in support of the center as requested.

Qualifications
The minimum requirement is that the individual be 18 years of age. This is an entry-level position requiring no previous education or experience. HS/GED is highly preferred. Current and former Early Head Start and Head Start parents will receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified. CDA or AA in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred. Current CPR, First Aid, and Food Handler’s permit required. Must be able to work with children with special needs and children with limited or no English. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred. Physical requirements include extended periods of walking, standing, kneeling, and crouching; the ability to lift and move 50 pounds;
