Job Duties

This position is under the supervision of the Director of Highway Maintenance and the Maintenance Operations Engineer and will perform a variety of tasks, designed to prepare and train for the position of district superintendent, such as the following:

  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic by leading the daily operations within a district facility (garage) in support of agency goals to provide safe and convenient roads for the motoring public, regardless of weather or road conditions.
  • Successfully manages the workforce including developing daily workforce assignments, communication, performance evaluation/feedback, positive discipline and training. May participate in new hire interviews.
  • Ability to coordinate work and develop strong working relationships within the Road Commission, while recognizing priorities within all other districts and departments.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement in daily management of unionized employees.
  • Monitor equipment usage and maintenance; request and monitor equipment repairs.
  • Develop/mentor district employees.
  • Develop strong external working relationships with local township and city officials.
  • Acquire/demonstrate the necessary technical knowledge related to Urban/Rural Road Maintenance.
  • Stay abreast of new techniques and procedures by attending training programs focused on supervisory and managerial skills to be used daily.
  • Must perform duties in a professional and courteous manner to promote a positive image of the Road Commission for Oakland County.


Specialist Experience/Education

  • A high school diploma or GED is required. Additional certificates/training and post-secondary education is a plus.
  • A valid State of Michigan Driver's License with a CDL Class "A", or the ability to obtain such.
  • Between 3 and 5 years of management and/or supervisory experience with demonstrated progressive responsibility.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Application. Ability to learn other specific information processing systems.
  • Strong verbal/non-verbal communication skills and organizational skills.
  • Previous Garage Management / Road Maintenance / Road Construction / Project Management Experience/ Heavy-Duty Equipment familiarity a plus.
