Position Purpose:

Operates equipment, monitors mechanical performance, records data, completes work orders, responds to customer complaints, reads gauges and instruments. Routine maintenance inspections and preventative/corrective tasks as identified and assigned. Responsibilities that include oiling, greasing, cleaning, and rotating equipment operation, pump/motor removal/repair/installations. Performs utility Miss Dig locations, repairs meters, sewer service calls, thaws frozen water services. Isolates water main breaks and assists with repairs. Assists with sewer main repairs. The job requires that the employee be responsible and able to work independently to complete all required tasks. Conduct Vactor Truck operations and jetting of sanitary system. Work as a team with your fellow employees to get all task done.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operates and monitors equipment performance.
  • Completes work orders.
  • Responds to customer complaints.
  • Performs preventive/corrective maintenance.
  • Performs Utility Miss Digs location marking.
  • Isolates water main breaks, turning valves.
  • Participates in water and sewer main repair.
  • Sample collection.
  • Performs sewer and water service calls.
  • Installs water meters, take reads, services and troubleshoots meters as needed.
  • Conducts Vactor excavations and high-pressure jetting of sanitary system.
  • Performs maintenance/operations tasks as assigned.
Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required, advanced education is preferred.
  • Experience in public works field work, water distribution, sanitary collection systems, water and wastewater treatment and maintenance operations, or varied maintenance or construction work in sanitary, storm, or water utilities; demonstrated proficient equipment operations; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge and skill in construction practices, methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in the water distribution, stormwater, and/or sanitary sewer maintenance and repair field.
  • Extensive knowledge in the operation, maintenance, and use of heavy construction and hydraulic pipeline cleaning equipment used in public utility operations and maintenance including large dump trucks, repair vans with trailers, front end loaders, backhoes with various attachments and so on.
  • Knowledge of MIOSHA Health and Safety Regulations pertaining to recordkeeping, traffic safety, personal protective equipment, trenching and shoring practices, respiratory protection, employee right-to-know, and confined space entry procedures.
  • Strong ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and effectively communicate with others.
  • Ability to skillfully direct and train in the use of a wide range of hand, power, and mechanical tools.
  • Strong aptitude for understanding and working from maps, blueprints, sketches, and diagrams detailing streets, pipelines, and facilities and the use of computers for recordkeeping and data management.
  • Strong ability to train, plan, organize, schedule, assign resources and coordinate the work of subordinate employees and crews.
  • Ability to direct the performance of heavy and complicated manual labor for extended periods under adverse operating and climatic conditions.
  • Considerable knowledge of the materials, procedures, and equipment of the particular area of work.
  • Strong aptitude in the use of computers and other technology used in the utility's profession.
  • Detail and performance-based productivity.
  • Ability to use a computer, tablet and cell phone.
  • Ability to use and demonstrate skill with hand/power tools.
  • Must be available for emergency situations 24 hours 7 days a week as well as be part of the on-call rotation to answer calls after hours.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Valid Driver’s License in State of Residency with the ability to meet Risk Management guidelines.
  • Michigan EGLE Distribution System Operator Certification S-4 required or ability to obtain and maintain this certification within 2 years of high. 
  • Also, must be willing to achieve more certification levels to ensure knowledge and skill level. 
  • Also, EGLE may require a Collection System certification in the near future which must be obtained.
