POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Deputy Police Chief, the Police Lieutenant assists in the supervision and direction of police sergeants, subordinate police officers and other department personnel as a watch commander.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. As a sworn Police Officer, performs duties that consist of providing community protection.
  • Places own life or personal safety at risk.
  • Performs duties that actively prevent or detect crime and enforce criminal statutes or ordinances of the state of Utah and the City of South Salt Lake.
  • Responds to situations involving threats to public safety and making emergency decisions affecting the lives and health of others.
  1. Supervises department sergeants and assists in the supervision of police officers and department support personnel.
  • Prepares work schedules and approves overtime cards as necessary.
  • Assists in the supervision of department programs such as training, community events, and special projects.
  • Coordinates off-duty employment requests.
  • Establishes and distributes operational and special orders as needed.
  1. Monitors departmental compliance with established department policy and procedures and standard operating procedures.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of quality control guidelines.
  • Processes and resolves complaint allegations brought against department personnel.
  1. Provides training, coaching and evaluation to subordinate police officers.
  • Monitors the officer evaluation process.
  • Reviews department personnel reports and takes appropriate action to ensure optimal officer performance.
  • Represents Police Department at public meetings as necessary.
  • Communicates city concerns and needs.
  • Delivers city position on issues affecting multiple jurisdictions.
  1. As needed and in the absence of the sergeant, exercises close supervision over patrol units, and other sworn personnel.
  • Monitors work in divisions such as daily incidents, arrests, and bookings, ensures proper approval process of reports.
  • Supervises and participates in major criminal investigations as necessary.
  • Functions as department public information officer in the absence of the P.I.O.
  • Assumes department direction and administration in the absence of the Deputy Police Chief.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Must have completed the Peace Officer Standards and Training and have current LEO certification through Utah POST.
  • Two years of experience as a police sergeant, lieutenant, or law enforcement leadership.
  • Crisis Intervention Team certified.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of uniform police procedures and city codes.
  2. Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques.
  3. Knowledge of the proper use of firearms.
  4. Knowledge of police department programs and reporting systems.
  5. Familiarization and general understanding of city and department policy and procedures as well as general budget procedures.
  6. Skill in public administration and organization procedures.
  7. Skill in word processing, spreadsheets, office machine usage and the operation of micro-computers.
  8. Ability to work under extremely dangerous physical conditions and periods of mental duress.
  9. Ability to supervise and motivate subordinate police officers.
  10. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in precarious places and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, extreme cold, and vibration.
