The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 109 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHMLA at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Program Manager, School & Teacher Programs for our Education & Programs department. The Program Manager, School & Teacher Programs works closely with the Manager of School & Teacher Programs at the Natural History Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.


Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Specific School & Teacher Programs duties include: Development and execution (including facilitation) of programming aligned with the Museum’s strategic goals and initiatives for the school and teacher audience and community events both at the Museums and via online virtual platforms. This includes daily school visits, guided programs, special events, webinars, partnership programs, and educator workshops in alignment with Museum’s IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) initiatives. Represents the Museum and supports guest and audience needs.

  • Content Development: Works with supervisor to develop new content for programs. Forges and maintains professional relationships with internal and external local, regional, and national teachers, scholars, professionals, businesses, community organizations, and educational institutions for programs. Research and develop curricula, activities, lesson plans, and other educational resources for Pre-K - 12.

  • Project Management Support: Cultivates relationships across departments; works closely with staff across the Museum on planning and implementation of programs, including staff in Security, Operations, Exhibitions, Guest Relations, Membership, Advancement, Marketing and Communication, Museum Store, etc. Coordinates design and/or artwork selection for programs and events. Oversees budgets for project-specific programs and initiatives. Coordinates the work of interdepartmental teams to ensure the timely delivery of program assets.

  • Written Communication: Generates weekly field trip reminders, event promotion and information, and follow-up communication to schools and teachers from our School Programs email account. Responsible for updating programs and resources on the Museum's website.

  • Program Management: Oversees the planning and execution of programs and events for students and teachers. Supports interdepartmental trainings for various departments. Coordinates the set­up, production, and breakdown for events. Facilitates communication regarding event logistics and concerns with other Museum departments. Manages multiple programs for multiple audiences concurrently.

  • Data Management & Reporting: Maintains accurate and effective metrics of all program attendance. Gathers data for general information purposes or special reports, contacting other departments, employees and external parties for needed information and drafts reports as requested. Produces attendance and demographic reports as needed.


This position has the following requirements:

  • Background or coursework in science, history, education, art or related field represented by the Museum; related Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.

  • Two or more years of experience working with schools and/or family audiences in an education setting; background in museum institutions is preferred, but not required.

  • Program Design & Facilitation: Experience developing and executing programs for Pre-K - 12 grade audience; background in working with diverse populations preferred.

  • Commitment to IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access): Background or experience with engagement and inclusion of culturally diverse audiences in museums and in the sciences.

  • Collaborative Working Style: Ability to work independently and as part of a team with frequent group meeting participation. Excellent follow-through and attention to detail. Must be highly organized and detail oriented with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks while managing time efficiently.

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment working with a diverse community. Hourly rate for this position is $25.00 based on experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full time-regular, non- exempt position.
