General Description:

The Forklift Operator shall adopt the culture, standards, values and working environment as outlined by the Department Manager and the entire executive management team. The Forklift Operator is responsible for ensuring the inventory needs of all production areas are met, to accurately and efficiently load and unload trucks and Kilns, servicing the mill, and assisting in the organization of the yard in accordance with the Kennebec Lumber Co. standards. The Loader Operator will assist in keeping accurate inventory control, providing excellent customer service to all customers, coworkers and vendors while maintaining a high level of professionalism. In addition, this position will assist in maintenance of the grounds, organization and the daily care of the equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Work flexible hours: occasionally stay late, come in early, and shifting breaks based on yard needs
  • Loading and Unloading Trucks
  • Accurately tagging and strapping lumber
  • Rotating stock as directed
  • Organizing placement of lumber in the yard
  • Waxing Lumber Packs
  • Performing light maintenance tasks on equipment
  • Efficiently operate and input data into handheld device for shipping and inventory
  • Maintain solid ongoing communication with other yard staff and loader operators to facilitate smooth operation of yard activities
  • Keep Workspace Organized and clean – inclusive of equipment cabs
  • Obtain any supplies through proper channels and SOP
  • Demonstrate exemplary customer service to customers, coworkers, vendors, and all site visitors at all times
  • Service the mill as needed
  • Assist with all trucks – incoming and outgoing
  • Maintain Grounds, organization and accuracy
  • Accurate documentation of all loads
  • Fueling equipment at end of every shift
  • Conduct equipment inspections at the beginning of every working shift and complete the Daily Inspection Sheet
  • Greasing machines and Preventative Maintenance items and documentation
  • Maintain effective communication regarding inventory, stain, and other yard related issues with the Manager or other effected employees.
  • Participate in the snow removal process as directed by Management
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Miscellaneous Requirements:

  • Safety First – Personal Protective Equipment
    1. Steel Toe footwear is required in all areas.
    2. Gloves required in designated areas – per task in mill.
    3. Hearing Protection required in all areas (Exception being inside the cab of outside machine forklifts).
    4. Eye Protection required in all areas
    5. Report all near misses and unsafe acts to Yard/Kilns Manager.
    6. Pedestrian awareness at all times.
    7. Florescent vests and hard hats are required for all outside activity (Exception, pedestrian travel from one building to another).
    8. Never walk through any overhead door that is controlled remotely (Always use access door next to overhead).
    9. Familiarize yourself with the various work areas.
    10. Familiarize yourself with the various possible pinch points that are in your area.

  • Radio Communication & Acknowledgement
    1. Use professionalism at all times
    2. Answer all calls in a timely manner

  • Physical Requirements
    1. Bend, stretch, stoop, squat, push, pull & twist multiple times daily.
    2. Normal physical agility is a must
    3. Light to Moderate wrist / hand repetitions.
    4. Stand / Walk for long periods of time on uneven surfaces as needed
    5. No allergies to sawdust, particles in the air (respiratory concerns)
    6. Ability to work in all weather conditions (below 0 degrees temps to over 90-degree temps).
    7. Ability to lift from 1-75 pounds from floor level to five feet level frequently
    8. Continuous step climbing in and out of a vehicle
    9. Continuous reaching and pulling at least half of the weight of their body
      1. Operator must be able to use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without any trouble

  • Other Requirements
    1. Pick up after yourself
    2. Participate in the department housekeeping program
    3. Work area kept clean at all times
    4. Excellent hand / eye coordination
    5. Attention to detail is a must
    6. Must be working until the buzzer.
    7. Additional training as required.
