Job Summary

This position is responsible for supervising and training lifeguard staff. Tasks involve monitoring the pool for the safety of patrons and the provision of information on water quality, temperature, and other related items. Duties are performed following current Red Cross lifeguard policies and procedures, and County codes and procedures for building maintenance. The Aquatics Supervisor assigns work. Work shifts include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Assists Aquatics Supervisor in planning, organizing, and assigning staff work and assignments.

Monitors the pool with constant attention to all swimmers in supervision by circulating the pool area.

Safeguards and regulates the conduct of patrons to prevent unsafe practices and accidents; warns users of existing safety hazards.

Responds promptly and appropriately when rescue or first aid is necessary.

Enforces all pool rules.

Tests water and records results at scheduled times.

Notifies Aquatics Supervisor if chlorine or pH is too high or too low, verbally and in writing.

Keeps the pool area clean.

Arranges for coverage of shift in the event of absence.

Follows lifeguard maintenance schedule for pool/deck cleanings.

Takes an active role in monitoring lap swimmers and ensures proper speed in the lane.

Follow an emergency action plan in the event of an emergency or incident.

Completes accident and Injury reports thoroughly for submission to the Aquatics Supervisor.

Takes out and puts in lane lines.

Attend all staff meetings and training.

Effects rescue and performs appropriate follow-up procedures, including the use of any available equipment in the performance of first aid.

Participates in the maintenance and preparation of daily records relating to rescues, assistance, first aid, water conditions, and sanitation.

Teaches and schedules, morning aerobics classes, and swimming lessons.

Knowledge of life-saving techniques, methods, and procedures.

Knowledge of emergency first aid and resuscitation techniques and methods.

Knowledge of maintenance of pool equipment.

Skill in swimming and rescue activities.

Skill in administration of emergency first aid and artificial resuscitation.

Ability to communicate effectively through the spoken word.

Ability to react promptly and calmly in emergency, life-threatening situations.

Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job.

Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and mornings.

Ability to swim long distances quickly.

Ability to reach with hands and arms and bend at the waist.

Ability to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, unassisted.

Ability to see, including depth perception.

Ability to smell.

Work is typically performed in an outdoor or indoor pool facility.

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Three (3) years of lifeguarding or similar experience.
3. OR have a combination of education, training, and work experience equivalent to #1 and #2 above that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
4. Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, including CPRO and First-Aid certification.
5. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
6. Water Fitness Instructor certification.

Lifeguard Instructor certification.
