Employees in this classification are responsible for the safety of patrons at the County pool. Work involves monitoring the pool for the safety of patrons and the provision of information pertaining to water quality, temperature, and other related items. Employees in this class must be excellent swimmers and certified instructors and must have mastered appropriate lifeguarding techniques including swimming, lifting, and running. This classification Is distinguished from the Lifeguard I classification based on the additional responsibility for Instructing water safety and/or water fitness classes, required experience, and additional required Instructor certifications. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor or Lead Lifeguard.

Essential Functions

Monitors the pool with constant attention to all swimmers in the area of supervision by circulating around the pool area.

Instructs water safety and water fitness classes.

Safeguards and regulates the conduct of patrons to prevent unsafe practices and accidents; warns users of existing safety hazards.

Responds promptly and appropriately when rescue or first aid is necessary. Knows and enforces all pool rules.

Tests water and records result at scheduled times. Notifies supervisor if chlorine or pH is too high or too low, verbally and in writing.

-Keeps pool area clean.

Arranges for coverage of shift in the event of absence.

Follows lifeguard maintenance schedule for pool/deck cleanings.

Takes an active role in the monitoring of lap swimmers and ensures proper speed in the lane. Follows emergency action plan In event of an emergency or incident.

Completes accident and injury reports thoroughly.

Takes out and puts in lane lines before, during, or as the shift ends. Attends all staff meetings and training.

Effects rescue and performs appropriate follow-up procedures including the use of any available equipment in the performance of first aid.

Participates In the maintenance and preparation of daily records relating to rescues, assists, first aid, water conditions, and sanitation.

May serve as a lead lifeguard In the absence of the said employee.

Employees In this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of life-saving techniques, methods, and procedures.

Knowledge of emergency first aid and resuscitation techniques and methods. Knowledge of appropriate maintenance of pool equipment.

Knowledge of water safety and water fitness methods, techniques, and procedures. Skill in swimming and rescue activities.

Skill In the administration of emergency first aid and artificial resuscitation. Ability to communicate effectively through spoken work.

Ability to react promptly and calmly in emergency, lif" threate11lng situations. Ability to occasionally swim long distances quickly.

Ability to reach with hands and arms and bend at the waist.

Ability to lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, unassisted. Ability to see, including color, depth, and texture perception. Ability to make fine distinctions In sound.

Ability to smell.
Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an outdoor or Indoor pool facility.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Six (6) months of paid lifeguarding experience.
  2. Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, including CPR and First Aid certifications.
  3. Current Water Safety Instructor (WSI} and Water Fitness Instructor (WFI) certifications.

NOTE: All required certifications must be kept current and valid while employed In this classification.
