Job DescriptionJob Description

SUMMARY
The Center and Family Support Assistant is first on call to work as a classroom substitute teacher for Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms in an assigned service area. A service area will include centers within a specified geographical area.

When not required to substitute for absent teaching staff, this position will support HS and EHS Family Advocates in providing comprehensive case management services that will support families in fostering their child’s development and assist them in attaining their family goals. This position may also include janitorial duties at certain centers if their service schedule requires this additional support.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
All duties are to be performed in accordance with Head Start Standards, TDFPS Minimum Standards, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and Cen-Tex Family Services, Inc. (Cen-Tex) policies and procedures.
As a Substitute Teacher

Assist the classroom Teacher* with the implementation of individual and group activities to stimulate growth in the areas of language development; literacy; mathematics; science; creative arts; social and emotional development; and physical development.

Respond quickly and directly to children’s needs, desires and verbal and non-verbal messages adapting the response to the children’s differing styles and abilities. Relate to infants and toddlers in a calm, caring, nurturing, soothing manner, responding to all cries, babbles and talks, using appropriate child guidance techniques at all times. Stay involved with the children at all times during the day.

Model conversation, manners, clean-up activities, listening, etc. for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior.

Ensure that appropriate child-staff ratio is met while delivering services and children are supervised at all times. Maintain a safe and secure learning environment for children, both indoors and out during all program hours.

Provide meals and snacks to the children according to their age, development and needs. Feed infants on demand, hold them every time they are fed and share information about their eating to the parents daily. Participate in and assist at toddler meal and snack time following appropriate family style meal services and guiding children in clean-up afterwards. Maintain accurate records of daily attendance and meal counts.

Assist teachers in recording observations, assessments and other required documentation for each child’s records within established guidelines.

Promote parent involvement in the child's education and well being. Provide guidance for parent and other volunteers.

Provide for health and safety by following procedures for hand-washing, dental hygiene practices, change of bedding, sanitation of toys, and toileting. Provide diapering as required. Assist in toilet training with toddlers in cooperation with parents. Disinfect work area surfaces as needed. Instruct children in self-help skills and personal hygiene. Ensure that classrooms are clean and orderly.

As a Family Advocate Assistant
Promote parent and family involvement in children’s education and well being. Support parents and families to advocate for themselves and their families.

Promote timely and sufficient communications with center’s parents, including: their child’s progress in the program; announcements; facility and agency activities; policies; enrollment procedures; and developmental/behavioral concerns.

May provide clerical support by: creating and maintaining child files, health records and parent contacts; assisting in related correspondence and communications with parents, including scheduling parent conferences; entering computer data of volunteer information and volunteer time into the child tracking system; supporting recruitment and enrollment by distributing applications, brochures and flyers to local stores, community agencies and schools, and sending letters to the community.

Support Teachers regarding child attendance concerns by: communicating with families; assisting with development of plans to remedy concerns; and following up with families as needed to support plans.

Serve as a resource to families, staff and the community about the Agency’s available services.

Assist Family Advocates with conducting follow-up on Family Partnership Agreements and providing support to families on attaining goals identified during this process. Support and promote parent participation in parent involvement activities. Assist with plans and support monthly classroom Parent Meetings with Teacher and parents.

May assist families with obtaining health and dental services, and other child/family services identified, as part of ongoing case management. Assist with maintaining a system of follow-up with families on referrals to community agencies to assure the satisfactory provision of services. May arrange for or provide transportation for service access.

Accompany Teachers on home visits as needed. Assist families with identification and access to resources as needed, including; health, mental health, social services, education and job training. Maintain familiarity with the needs of families served by the program, and area services and resources available to meet those needs, including crisis intervention and holiday assistance programs.

Assist Family Advocates with maintaining a system of follow-up with families on referrals to community agencies to assure the satisfactory provision of services.

In All Areas:
Provide for the safekeeping of center files, supplies and equipment. Ensure confidentiality of agency and family information assigned to position.

Participate as a cooperative team member with coworkers and supervisor in delivering services to children and families and supporting center operations. Working as a team member includes adapting to changing work priorities and exhibiting tact and patience when working with others.

Work effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds, and those with disabilities and special needs. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.

Report to work at scheduled time and maintain good attendance. Perform all duties in a safe, timely and professional manner. Participate with a positive attitude and behavior in all program activities.

Continue professional growth by participating in classes, training programs, workshops/conferences, as the budget allows.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18 years of age as required by the TDFPS Minimum Standards for Child-Care Centers. his position is expected to travel on agency business within assigned service area. Depending on agency resources, employees may be required to provide private transportation to complete assigned duties. Employees will be reimbursed for approved mileage following the guidelines as set forth in the agency Personnel Policies.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Preferred Requirements: listed in order of preference:
1. Associate's degree, baccalaureate, or advanced degree including at least 6 college courses early childhood education* and/or child development* and 6 college credit hours in business management*.
2. Progress toward pursuit of college degree in early childhood education or child development; and Child Development Associate (CDA) or equivalent credential.
3. CDA or equivalent credential.
4. Eligible to possess CDA credential.
One or more years of experience teaching, or assistant teaching 3 or 4 year old children in a licensed child care center.

Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED);
At least six months experience teaching, or assistant teaching 3 or 4 year old children in a licensed child care center.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Preferred Requirements:
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Minimum Requirements:
