What is this job?


The bilingual candidate (Spanish and English Speaking) The Caminos Home Study Post Release Services (HSPRS) Therapist provides community-based intensive case management services to recently migrated children, adolescents, and their families. The Therapist is responsible for applying their clinical expertise in the provision of strengths based, culturally and linguistically appropriate intensive case management services. With a focus on stabilization of the family unit, the Therapist utilizes interventions tailored to the needs of recently migrated youth and their sponsor family, in the community where their sponsor resides. Providing weekly intensive in-home services, the Therapist engages in a continuous clinical assessment process, ensuring safety and stability of the youth and family while building a healthy relationship and rapport. The Therapist supports the delivery of Board of Child Care’s (BCC) trauma responsive model by developing service plans that incorporate individualized interventions to address needs unique needs of the youth and family, utilizing a range of financial, medical, social, vocational, psychoeducation, crisis stabilization and other services and resources.

What is the Caminos Program?

You would be helping children who have recently migrated to the United States and are seeking opportunities for reunification with family as well as the chance to pursue their education and legal immigration cases. Everstand calls this our Caminos program, and we see it as a fulfillment of our purpose as a non-profit: to enrich communities, one family at a time.

What does this job do specifically?

  • Complete an in-home assessment with youth and sponsor family, followed by weekly in-person contacts for the first 45-60 calendar days, depending on the presenting need(s) of the youth and sponsor family. As needs stabilize, the Therapist can deliver services remotely with at least once per month in-person visits occurring throughout the remainder of the case.
  • Responsible for providing ongoing and comprehensive clinical assessment, with a focus on building a support system for the youth that includes both formal and informal supports, promotes healthy and safe communication within the household, connects the youth and sponsor family to community resources and offers psychoeducational support to the youth and the family.
  • Using evidenced based practices, deliver short term brief clinical interventions to assist the youth and sponsor family in skills development, healthy communication and strengthening internal and external resources and supports.
  • During in home visits, the Therapist will:
    1. Conduct an assessment of the youth’s safety, emotional wellbeing, and stability within the placement environment.
    2. Meet with youth and members of the family, conducting interviews and assessments in order to identify priorities and trends to inform psychoeducational sessions.
    3. Conduct safety planning, risk assessment and crisis intervention with a focus on family preservation and collaboration with community based support services.
    4. Continually assess ongoing changes in behavior and general conditions that could impact the safety, wellbeing, and success of the youth.
  • Collaborate with youth, family and PRS case management team to develop, establish and update individualized service plans that demonstrate youth and family voice and includes clear needs statements, strength-based strategies, and goals that are measurable, specific and designed to improve the youth’s placement stability and emotional well-being.
  • Monitor youth and sponsor family progress towards goal completion.
  • Coordinate internally with the PRS case management team to accept referrals of youth receiving Level 1 or 2 services that would benefit from more intensive, Level 3 services.
  • Coordinate referrals and address barriers in relevant service need areas such as legal, education, medical and mental health.
  • Support youth and sponsor family with enrollment and access to services in community.
  • Support youth and sponsor family through the identification of options for youth programming, services / activities that promote a health connection to the new community, reflect interests, skills and talents of the youth and promote a connection to their culture and traditions.
  • Conduct outreach and education to community service providers to supplement existing services that do not adequately address the unique needs of the youth and families.
  • Advocate for the youth and sponsor family in order to address barriers to accessing resources and to support them in navigating complex systems (child welfare, immigration court, etc.).
  • Provides in person support to youth and sponsor family as they navigate stressful and/or traumatic experiences. This may include but is not limited to attending psychiatric and medical appointments, social service appointments, educational meetings and / or supporting a youth at a local hospital emergency department while they await psychiatric evaluation.
  • Create and revise safety and crisis response plans with youth and their family, ensuring awareness of available 24 hour and crisis response hotlines.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with local and federal social support and child welfare organizations, including but not limited to Child Protection Services, Trafficking Victims Assistance Program, law enforcement and behavioral healthcare providers.
  • The Therapist will have the training and ability to conduct focused, collaborative home study services to unaccompanied children and their sponsors to ensure and support the safe and timely release from federal care.
  • Conduct in-person home visits to interview, assess, recognize priorities and trends to inform psychoeducational sessions with Sponsors.
  • Complete home study recommendation within 10 days of referral.
  • Provide Level 1 and Level 2 PRS case management services as determined based on program needs and assigned case capacity.
  • Delivers mandated services and documents all client contacts, resources and referrals provided, clinical notes, support services and interventions, and assessments of client’s health, safety, social-emotional well-being, and mental health concerns in accordance with Board of Child Care and Office of Refugee Resettlement required deadlines. Ensure assigned case records meet documentation standards both with regards to documentation in the required agency, state and federal databases and with regards to the client case file.
  • Develop and maintain emotional intelligence for effective self-care and act as the role model for youth, sponsor families and program staff, which is the essence of Trauma Informed Practice.
  • Active participation in mandatory case review and planning meetings, demonstrating the ability to present an accurate and concise client summary to both internal and external team members.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and familiarity with both Everstand and Office of Refugee Resettlement Policy and Procedures relating to the care and community-based treatment of Unaccompanied Children and/or recently migrated youth. This includes knowledge of legal background and authority governing the practice as related to working with Unaccompanied Children.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the value of cultural diversity, including the ability to develop systems and practices that are inclusive of diverse staff members and responsive to the cultural needs of the client population served.
  • Identify supervision and/or professional training needs to supervisor as they arise.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Obtain and maintain certification as a “user” in Everstand’s electronic health record software system, Cx360.

Required Education and Experience

    • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, or other relevant behavioral science in which direct clinical experience is a program requirement or;
    • Bachelor’s degree in one of the above categories with at least five years of clinical experience from an accredited college or University
    • Current LMSW, LGPC, LCSW-C, LCPC, LGMFT, LCMFT, or eligible for licensure at the time of application.
    • Fluent in both English and Spanish

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience working with diverse populations, including refugee and/or unaccompanied immigrant children and adolescents
  • One year experience providing direct services to youth and families
  • One year experience delivering community based and / or in home services

Required Language Skills

  • Spanish-speaking and reading are a must. We accept candidates who have varying degrees of fluency. For this position really being comfortable at the conversational level is key, as you're welcoming new kids into the program and providing an orientation to the program in Spanish.
