Job Description: Insurance Underwriter
Overview: As an Insurance Underwriter, you will assess insurance applications and determine the level of risk associated with insuring individuals or entities. You will analyze information, evaluate risks, and make decisions on insurance policy approvals, premiums, and terms. Your role is crucial in maintaining profitability for the insurance company while ensuring fair coverage for policyholders.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Risk Assessment and Analysis:
- Evaluate insurance applications and assess risk factors such as applicant's health, occupation, lifestyle, and insurance history.
- Analyze data from various sources including medical reports, financial statements, and underwriting databases.
- Determine appropriate coverage limits, premiums, and terms based on risk analysis.
Policy Underwriting and Decision Making:
- Make underwriting decisions based on established guidelines, underwriting policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Review policy applications and supporting documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Collaborate with actuaries and other underwriting team members to assess risk and pricing.
Client Communication and Relationship Management:
- Communicate decisions and underwriting reasons to insurance agents, brokers, and clients.
- Provide guidance and recommendations on improving insurability or mitigating risks.
- Maintain positive relationships with stakeholders and address inquiries or concerns promptly.
Compliance and Documentation:
- Ensure compliance with insurance regulations and company policies.
- Maintain accurate records of underwriting decisions, correspondence, and documentation.
- Assist in audits and regulatory inspections as needed.
Risk Mitigation and Portfolio Management:
- Monitor and analyze portfolio performance, trends, and profitability.
- Identify emerging risks and recommend strategies to mitigate them.
- Participate in product development and pricing discussions based on market trends and analysis.
Compensation:
- Performance Bonus: May include performance-based incentives tied to individual and company performance metrics.

Skills Required:
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to assess risk factors and make sound underwriting decisions.

- Decision-Making: Ability to make informed and timely underwriting decisions based on risk assessment.
- Industry Knowledge: Understanding of insurance principles, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Computer Proficiency: Familiarity with underwriting software and databases.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field (Master's degree or professional certifications such as CPCU, AU, or ARM may be preferred).
- 2-5 years of experience in insurance underwriting, preferably in the specific line of insurance (life, health, property, casualty, etc.) being underwritten.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, financial analysis, and risk assessment methodologies.
