The Advanced Optics R&D group at CFD Research is on a mission to revolutionize optical systems for commercial and Department of Defense (DoD) applications. We focus on advancing infrared imaging systems and sensors using innovative technologies based on nanostructured optical materials, such as metamaterials and metasurfaces. CFD Research seeks candidates interested in moving beyond conventional optical design and analysis to be part of a team dedicated to unlocking the future of optics. Together, we'll explore new frontiers and create optical technologies with real-world impacts.

Job Responsibilities/Opportunities:

  • Assist in the design, development, and characterization of infrared imaging and sensing prototypes.
  • Contribute to the generation of new concepts for advanced infrared systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to transition research findings into practical applications.
  • Present research findings, write technical reports, and contribute to proposals and scientific publications.
  • Learn and grow under the mentorship of top scientists and engineers in the optics and nanophotonics field.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related field.
  • Experience with optical design tools such as ZEMAX, CODE V, or similar software.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages and data analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Hands-on experience with optical systems in a lab environment.
  • Basic knowledge of optical design and assembly techniques.
  • Understanding of fundamental optics concepts including imaging, radiometry, physical and geometric optics, and polarization.
  • Excellent interpersonal and technical communication skills.
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and have the ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance

Location: This role is based in the Huntsville, AL area, and is 100% onsite.
