POSITION TITLE: Food Services Director (501)

REPORTS TO: Vice President of Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:

This leadership role oversees daily operations of LifeCare Alliance’s home-delivered meals food production and distribution facilities, as well as LifeCare Alliance’s LA Catering and Meals for Kids teams. Strong forecasting, planning, and implementation skills, in addition to creative problem-solving abilities, are required. The Director is responsible for overseeing departmental programs and policies, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements. A collaborative spirit is needed to build and maintain strong relationships throughout the Alliance. Specifically with regard to LA Catering and Meals for Kids, it is critical that this position be a key contributor, sustaining partnerships with referral sources, event spaces, and kids’ meal sites. This position is responsible for growing, mentoring, and sustaining a large, diverse, mission-driven team comprised of paid staff and volunteers. Strategic curiosity and an eye for innovation are needed to ensure the LifeCare Alliance remains a nationally recognized thought-leader in the field of nutrition and aging. The flexibility to switch gears often and work in a loud, fast-paced environment is essential. The Director must be able to maintain focus and composure in anticipation of and response to critical incidents and service disruptions.

Principal Responsibilities / Essential Functions:

  • Daily Operations: Direct daily food service operations for home-delivered meals, LA Catering and Meals for Kids, ensuring meals meet timing, quality, appearance, temperature, and portion standards.
  • Food Safety: Maintain food safety standards, adhering to guidelines from the Columbus Health Department and Ohio Department of Agriculture. Oversee product handling, storage, and monitoring forms.
  • Budget Management: Develop and monitor the annual budget; manage food, labor, supplies, and equipment budgets. Approve purchases and direct staff accordingly.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with Columbus Health Department, Ohio Department of Agriculture, and funder requirements. Develop menus and ensure they meet Ohio Department of Aging and other contract specifications. Maintain required documentation for audits.
  • Employee Relations: Manage employee relations, including orientation, training, supervision, corrective action, and evaluation.
  • Reporting: Implement and monitor productivity standards for all assigned areas. Submit monthly reports on food, labor, and supply. Initiate cost-saving measures and complete other assigned reports using various food services-specific software packages.
  • Program Development: Responsible for adapting operations as customer demand escalates and opportunities arise, ensuring integration into existing systems and sustained quality of service.
  • Facilities and Equipment Oversight: Provide preventative maintenance oversight for kitchen facilities and onsite equipment. Responsible for submitting RFPs and obtaining bids for equipment and facility purchases and repairs.
  • LifeCare Alliance Representation: Perform assigned department and Alliance functions, promoting a professional image. Represent the Alliance at functions and participate in Alliance committees. Participate in other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: Work in a large institutional kitchen with scheduled hours between a.m. opening and p.m. closing, Monday through Friday. Weekend and holiday work may be required. On-call availability 365-days is required.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of professional management experience in a large-volume food service facility (500+) required.
  • Bachelor degree in Dietetics or Food Service Management preferred.
  • Computer and word processing experience.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and vehicle available for LifeCare Alliance use.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise in food safety, sanitation, personal hygiene, food handling, and storage regulations.
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices, including employee selection, discipline, and performance evaluations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and task prioritization skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and promote effective working relationships with staff, clients, and community organizations.
  • Understanding of LifeCare Alliance philosophy, program objectives, and community resources.
  • Ability to interpret data for program planning and evaluations.
  • Experience with computers, word processing programs, and food service equipment.
  • Knowledge of funder regulations, budgeting processes, food cost accounting, and menu planning for large groups.
