JOB SUMMARY

The Transportation Coordinator works within the Heavy Equipment and Transportation (HEaT) department for Black Rock City’s (BRC) Department of Public Works (DPW).  This role aids in the coordination and transportation of Burning Man Project assets to and from BRC, and also offers administrative support to the DPW HEaT Transportation Manager. Together they oversee transportation operations, including but not limited to planning, logistics, scheduling, tracking, communications, equipment monitoring, and real-time problem solving.

 This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: 

  • From August - September:  Full-Time ,  Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Logistics (70%)

  • Under the direction of the DPW HEaT Transportation Manager and DPW HEaT Department Manager, coordinate asset tracking, intra-departmental communications, and driver dispatch.
  • Assist with the organization and tracking of Transportation requests and the creation of operational timelines.
  • Maintains documentation of departmental methods and protocols, as well as special projects and incidents, as requested by the HEaT Transportation Manager.
  • Analyzing complex loads, determining the most effective and safe way to load, transport, and unload items.

Administration (20%)

  • Collects and reviews drivers’ hours for payroll processing.
  • Collects and reviews driver’s logs for asset tracking.
  • Collects and submits truck maintenance logs and follows up on necessary maintenance.
  • Distributes rental resources, consumables, equipment and tools; ensures inventory is current at the end of the season.

Personnel (5%)

  • Attend and support crew attendance at daily Morning Meetings.
  • Takes notes at Transportation morning meetings and briefings.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Contribute to the load-in, strike, and general maintenance of HEaT Workspaces.
  • Read, understand, and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
  • Contribute to Burning Man’s LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations and work sites.
  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned.


LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation – Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

  

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Strong typing and computer skills (3+ years); working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive), Microsoft Word, and Excel; A willingness to learn, use, and routinely update online tools and documents; Comfortable with spreadsheets and with proactively asking questions should clarification be needed.
  • Communicates clearly, concisely and with appropriate professionalism both verbally and through written correspondence; Effective communication at all levels (able to adapt style when necessary) and comfortable with high-traffic two-way radio communication.
  • Able to work in a small office space with others under an intense workload while maintaining a sense of discernment around sensitive information, physical organization, and a calm, respectful demeanor.
  • Able to understand integrated plans and adhere to strict timelines; is detail oriented and able to remain self-motivated on task-fulfillment or take direction to switch priorities when necessary.
  • Have a keen curiosity or knowledge of Black Rock City(BRC), its departments and operations.
  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.
  • Able to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada.

Preferred

  • Experience with Google Suite
  • Experience with Microsoft Access
  • Experience with Logistics and Trucking operations
  • Basic first-aid knowledge
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

 

COMPENSATION

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From August - September is $15.00 - $16.00 per hour.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
  • On-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
