JOB SUMMARY

The Housing Specialist works with community organizations, government agencies and property owners to secure living arrangements, negotiate rents, deposits and move-in terms on behalf of clients in collaboration with the Housing Coordinator. Manages lease agreements for short-term, transitional and permanent housing. Works with a team to ensure the availability of appropriate housing options for clients.

  • Locate housing opportunities in defined areas to meet short-term, transitional and permanent client-housing needs.
  • Collaborates with Housing Coordinator regarding all lease agreements, including master leases and scattered-site leases.
  • Prepare subsidy applications, maintain client housing files, and ensure rent calculations are accurate.
  • Work closely with program service staff to understand individual client needs and preferences related to housing. Regularly communicate with the staff about housing alternatives and changes in availability.
  • Assist in monthly tenant rent collection
  • Work with professionals in the housing industry as well as advocates for disabled, homeless, senior citizens, veterans and low to moderate income persons.
  • Attend public meetings and engage in community outreach to provide housing assistance information.
  • Assist clients by driving them to housing locations and helping them to secure required documents for housing placement.
  • Conduct bio-psychosocial and/or housing screenings and VI-SPDAT Assessments utilizing the Coordinated Entry System (CES) in Clarity.
  • Perform shift management duties in coordination with other ACT staff. Function as assistant to shift manager as assigned.
  • Comply with all MHS and program rules, policies and procedures including HIPAA standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A.A degree in sociology, psychology or related field required. BA/BS preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience providing housing-related social services to clients.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of housing needs of individuals with mental illness.
  • Experience and ability to engage culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to interact positively with persons of diverse socio-economic backgrounds and education and maintain the distinction between therapeutic and social relationships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate with clients, family members, community leaders, housing professionals and staff members.
  • Ability to both work independently and to effectively collaborate with a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and EHR software.
  • Valid California driver’s license and current auto insurance coverage.
