Boulder, United States NEW ERA COLORADO FOUNDATI Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

Organizing Department Intern

Denver, Boulder, Northern and Western Interns

Job Description

Organizing Intern at New Era

New Era Colorado Foundation and New Era Colorado Action Fund are seeking 6 part-time organizing interns, one in each of our regions (Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Greeley, Durango, and Grand Junction), to support our regional organizing goals to engage and empower young people to harness their political power.

About New Era Colorado:

New Era aims to build a youth movement that fights for a common vision of the world: one that centers equality, prosperity, love, and joy. A vision where everyone is treated fairly, has their basic needs met, and can thrive. Young people are the most impacted by the challenges and issues we face today and have the capacity to dream bigger, designing the solutions towards this future. And yet, young people are often shut out from the halls of power and ignored by elected officials. That’s why at New Era, we organize young people to participate in the political process, develop as leaders, and find a political home. Since our founding in 2006, we’ve registered more than 250,000 young people to vote and consistently turn out those registrants at one of the highest rates in the country. We’ve won critical protections for student loan borrowers, played a key role in ballot measure campaigns to protect abortion rights and climate, enacted voter preregistration for 16- and 17-year-olds, advocated for key improvements to our voting systems, and more. Get to know us: Website | Facebook | Instagram

About the position:

New Era is seeking applicants to join our fall and spring cohort of organizing interns who will team up with our skilled Regional Lead Organizers across the state to develop foundational organizing skills and expertise to become strong organizers, and to build up Colorado’s next generation of progressive leaders. Interns will educate, engage, and mobilize young people on campuses and in our communities around our generation’s most critical issues, including economic justice, abortion rights, and more, to build youth power for the 2024 Election and beyond.

During the cohort, Organizing Interns will have the opportunity to support our goals around youth voter turnout in the 2024 election and passing a ballot initiative we’re supporting with Coloradans for Protecting Reproductive Freedom. The initiative would be a 2024 constitutional amendment to ensure the right to abortion is protected from government interference in Colorado. This is a critical step toward ensuring that all Coloradans, regardless of their occupation or source of insurance, have access to reproductive healthcare. Additional organizing goals will be determined by the Regional Lead Organizer in your region

The pay for this role is $20/hour for 15 hours/week. Position ends May 3rd, 2025.

Job Responsibilities:

The Organizing Intern reports to the Regional Lead Organizer in their assigned region and although their responsibilities will vary depending on the region and need for varying types of organizing tactics, they’ll generally be responsible for:

  • Field work as determined by our organizing goals, which could include:

    • Tabling multiple times a month on campus and in the community to register young people to vote, collect pledge to vote cards, and recruit other passionate young people to volunteer with us

    • Texting or phonebanking for the purpose organizing them around a particular action

  • Driving the establishment of a local chapter group in your region that can act as a political home for our members and run autonomously

    • Recruit passionate volunteers and young activists to join the chapter with established roles as needed

    • Establish and facilitate routine meetings as determined by you and the Regional Lead Organizer

  • Supporting Regional Lead Organizers as they plan regional events around voter education, voter turnout and issue advocacy

    • Researching and supporting with logistics for the event such as venue research and/or catering

    • Recruitment for events which may include supporting with visibility, volunteer calls and sharing events with campus/community partners

  • Supporting Regional Lead Organizers by researching local policy and issues aligned with the Youth Agenda

    • Keeping up to date with local news and attending local government meetings when relevant

  • Additional responsibilities may include but are not limited to: data entry support, reaching out or meeting with volunteers, attending partner events and overall shadowing work led by the Regional Lead Organizer

What We’re Looking For:

  • Enthusiastic about organizing and mobilizing young people face-to-face to participate in the political process: You are comfortable and ready to have constant conversations with young people to move them to action, using evolving scripts;

  • Flexibility, adaptability, and able to meet challenges with a solutions-mindset: You are willing and able to pivot and problem solve when challenges arise by using the resources available to you

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and transparent: You feel comfortable working independently while understanding how to routinely communicate updates with your manager as to remain on the same page towards goals

  • Fluency and commitment to anti-racism and equity: You have a deep investment in New Era’s anti-racism and equity work and are committed to support the organization through its growth.

  • Commitment to New Era’s mission: You are passionate about the work New Era does to engage young people in the political process and believe in the power of peer-to-peer organizing. You believe in the power of young people, grassroots organizing, and policy change.
