Job Title: Mental Health Counselor Intern

Job Summary:

CASES is seeking an non-paid Mental Health Counselor intern for our NCS team, who will join a multidisciplinary team comprised of a Team Leader, Forensic Case Coordinator, Substance Use Specialist, Peer Specialist, Clinical Criminal Legal Specialist, and Program Assistant. The Mental Health Counselor Intern will be responsible for providing support to the team, in the form of services to address certain risk factors, such as housing, criminal legal, substance use and mental health barriers. CASES offers free comprehensive training curriculum available to all interns. As well as training in the use of risk assessment measures and motivational interviewing techniques

CASES is looking for a Mental Health Counselor who is committed to social justice, and willing to learn evidence-based practices, effective violence risk management, and the principles of recovery-oriented and trauma informed services. The NCS team provides individualized clinical case management; linkage to services for mental health (including substance use problems) and medical treatment; and court-ordered supervision services. Each participant’s plan is individualized, responding to specific needs and risks to help each participant achieve and maintain recovery and reduce criminal recidivism.

Are you a Mental Health Counselor Intern looking to improve your skills in serving and advocating for individuals with mental illness? Are you interested in contributing to social justice for people impacted by the criminal legal system? If so, we need you on our Nathaniel Community Success (NCS) team at CASES NCS is a new alternative-to-incarceration (ATI) program that serves individuals of all genders, aged 16 and older, with mental illness (including substance use problems); this program operates in Manhattan and Brooklyn and will leverage the expertise of CASES in jail and prison alternatives and mental health treatment, including operation of an outpatient clinic and care coordination services. In doing so, NCS will directly help reduce the utilization of jails and prisons.

Salary: There is no monetary compensation for this role.

Shift Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm based on availability around school

Location Address: 151 Lawrence Street, 3rd Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201. The office is easily accessible by public transportation.

Workplace Flexibility: In-person

What you will be doing:

  • Collaborate with NCS colleagues to collectively manage the team caseload.
  • Provide in-person services in the program office in Manhattan or Brooklyn (whichever site that is chosen), as well as in the community, with the location of service delivery determined by participant need.
  • Act as advocate and liaison for participants in securing access to community services, housing, income support, and natural support such as self-help.
  • Complete charting using database following program standards and timelines.
  • Involve family, significant others, and participant-identified collateral contacts in service provision.
  • Provide culturally competent services in accordance with CASES policies and practice.
  • Any other duties as required by the Team Leader, Director, and Senior Director.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in social work, mental health, criminal justice, or related field.
  • Attending a Master program for an MSW, MHC or related degree,
  • Strong interest in working in human services with individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders and involvement in the criminal justice system.
  • Willingness to learn and adopt evidence-based principles to reduce recidivism risks.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated.
  • Proficient in computers.

Preferred skills but not required:

  • Fluency in Spanish
