Position Summary
The Project Engineer, with a focus on process engineering, is responsible for planning, executing, and completing projects aimed at developing and optimizing industrial processes. This role combines project management skills with deep process engineering knowledge to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet technical specifications.
An ideal candidate will be highly skilled, consistently punctual, and enjoy working with a variety of talented individuals who share similar values and goals.
General Duties/Responsibilities
- Work in a safe manner and comply with all health, safety, security, and emergency requirements.
- Comply with all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and other established processes.
- Develop project plans, schedules, and budgets specifically for process improvement and optimization projects.
- Collaborate with process operations to design and implement new processes or modify existing ones.
- Coordinate with various stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and internal teams, to ensure successful project execution.
- Monitor project progress, including the performance of new or modified processes, and make adjustments as needed.
- Ensure compliance with technical specifications, industry standards, and safety regulations.
- Oversee the procurement and installation of equipment and materials necessary for projects.
- Prepare and maintain detailed project documentation, including process flow diagrams, technical reports, and progress updates.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for process-related projects.
- Perform post-project evaluations to identify lessons learned and areas for future improvement.
- Communicate and coordinate with outside vendors as needed.
- Maintain proper documentation and record keeping, including data entry in the computer system.
- Assist with forecasting capital expenditures and leading capital projects in areas of responsibility.
- Attend and participate in department and interdepartmental meetings.
- Spearhead management of change activities associated with projects to ensure proper cross-department communication and alignment.
Food Safety and Quality Responsibilities
- Follow GMP policy when in the production facility and encourage your team to do the same.
- Understand our SQF policies relating to pest control, visitors, allergen management, and cleaning and sanitation.
- Demonstrate awareness of Management's Commitment to SQF and work towards Food Safety and Quality, helping the company meet this commitment.
- If a food quality or safety issue arises, report to the Quality Assurance Manager to ensure corrective and preventative actions are taken.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Comfortable learning new equipment and mechanical systems and troubleshooting under pressure.
- Proven track record of developing and sustaining systems and processes that ensure quality compliance.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize time autonomously in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-directed and personally motivated with strong attention to detail.
- Team player with strong communication and teamwork abilities.
- Resourceful, with the ability to efficiently allocate limited resources to maximize impact and keep timelines on track.
- Excellent attendance and performance track record.
- Knowledge of reliable OEMs and 3rd party contractors for key initiatives.
- Strong understanding of process design, optimization, and control, particularly in food and beverage production.
- Knowledge of food safety and quality standards and regulations (HACCP, SQF, PCQI).
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Food Science, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in process engineering and project management, preferably within the food and beverage industry.
- Certifications in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or similar methodologies relevant to food and beverage production.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times and up to 50 pounds as required.
- Ability to travel up to 30% or as projects require, with extended site visits necessary during key project phases.
