Teaching Assistant

The Strong is excited to be growing its education team to support our expanded Woodbury School that will welcome over 100 families of three, four, and five-year-olds to our Reggio Emilia inspired preschool and early kindergarten programs this fall. The teaching assistant is responsible for actively participating in the classroom through assisting in student development, encouraging student engagement, and maintaining a safe learning environment. This position documents student work and assists as needed in related school program activities and requires a background in early childhood education, classroom experience, as well as an outcome-oriented, collaborative work ethic. This is a part-time position with a weekly schedule of 29 hours or less during the school year.
Responsibilities Include:
- Under the direction and guidance of teachers, assist in fostering a stimulating, inviting, and nurturing environment for students. Assist in activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Discuss assigned duties with teachers to coordinate facilitation of students’ explorations.
- Guide and monitor students in the use and care of classroom and learning materials to prevent injuries and damage.
- Provide support and promote skill development for individual students or groups of students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
- Use teaching methods that conform with established museum procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information regarding children in their families both inside and outside the classroom.
- Document student work using methods consistent with the Reggio Emilia approach. Maintain portfolio of student work to track progress. Prepare and present displays of students’ work.
- Maintain a safe and sanitary environment that facilitates learning, including sweeping, encouraging handwashing, and supervising the children. Keep first aid supplies on hand at all times.
- Substitute as teacher in Woodbury School and attend preschool and early-kindergarten events as needed. When teaching class, operate, monitor, and communicate via a two-way radio connecting various museum teams including security and environmental services.
- Work with preschool team members to plan, coordinate, support, and attend family meetings and special events.
- Stock and replenish classroom materials and supplies.
- Assist in additional school program activities, including, but not limited to, the creation of curriculum materials and student projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education desired; will consider education in a related field or equivalent experience.
- Early childhood classroom experience.
- Possession of or ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification for children, including EPI-Pen training. Maintenance of this certification post-employment is required.
- Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.
