The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Foundation (Foundation) is a foundation created to enhance and expand the ability of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology (Alliance) to conduct cancer clinical research and address important treatment questions through large-scale clinical trials. Through efforts of the Foundation in support of the Alliance, clinical trials and laboratory research are conducted to discover new or improved ways to prevent, treat, and cure many types of cancer, including leukemia and lymphoma, and cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and help educate the medical community on methods of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology Foundation is looking for a Communications Specialist who is excited to use their skills and experience to develop a communications strategy that aligns with our organization's mission and vision. This role will also drive media and public relations initiatives, content development, social media engagement, executive communications, business team support, and market and industry research. ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for managing external communications functions, including media relations, business team support, social media engagement, executive communications, conference and event support, market research, media monitoring, and creation of direct content
  • Collaborate with Alliance leadership in the development of communications strategies to promote Alliance research and increase awareness of Alliance within the scientific research community and patient-centered associations; to optimize the profile of Alliance as an innovative leader in oncology research; and to disseminate Alliance research results not only for adoption into the standards of clinical practice but also for the education of patients and those touched by cancer
  • Develop style and content for presentation to the national and global oncology research community, current and potential research collaborators, and promotion of partnerships in Alliance’s vision to reduce the impact of cancer by uniting a broad community of scientists and clinicians
  • Responsible for managing communications with Alliance members, investigators, clinical research professionals, patient advocates, and the cancer research community as major stakeholders and audiences
  • Oversees daily media coverage, coordinates Alliance activities, manages key vendor relationships, and works directly with the Communications Manager and Training Coordinator on directing communications, public relations initiatives and campaigns
  • Provides proactive ideas to generate positive visibility and awareness
  • Attends meetings with various Alliance teams and helps prepare press releases, key messages, and question-and-answer documents
  • Responsible for Alliance communications, including social media strategy development, using a holistic approach to promote Alliance and cancer clinical research. Works with senior leaders and Communications Manager providing strategic support and mentoring on media and public relations strategies as necessary
  • Uses communications expertise in positioning and messaging to support Alliance growth and retention objectives
  • Responsible for developing and implementing social media and communications focus for Alliance Foundation Trials (AFT) and Alliance Data Innovation Labs (Data Labs), in an integrated manner with Alliance and Foundation overall
  • Responsible for developing and implementing all Site Engagement communications in support of continued Alliance program growth, diversity, and outreach activities, in collaboration with clinical trial and protocol operations, site management leadership/staff, Alliance programs and committees (e.g., community oncology, patient advocates, oncology nursing, clinical research professionals, etc.)
  • Responsible for increasing the development of Alliance Group-related work structure and associated activities. Work with Alliance programs and committees to develop content, determine optimal placement, distribution, shared access, media channels, and other logistics
  • Assist with the development of the Alliance website(s), including the main Alliance website and additional portals for Alliance entities and/or study-specific web pages
  • Distills complex information and effectively communicates messaging and ideas in written and verbal format for stakeholders
  • Demonstrates the ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex communications projects in varying stages of development
  • Demonstrates proficiency in all channels of communication including email, social media, and websites
  • Maintains strong organizational skills, idea-driven and demonstrates the skills to be strategic, proactive, and assertive

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field
  • 4+ years of experience in Journalism, Public Relations, Research, Clinical Trials or Oncology media experience

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • 3-4 years of PR, Media, or Communications experience, with a heavy focus on media relations and a demonstrated ability to engage with reporters and editors on a proactive and reactive basis
  • Documented expertise in social media and online content development
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Excellent computer and word processing skills; Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to learn quickly, meet deadlines, and perform in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and work efficiently under pressure
  • Proficient knowledge of social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and websites required
  • Working knowledge of the healthcare industry issues and trends preferred.
