Job Title: Peer Specialist Intern
Job Summary:
CASES is currently seeking a Peer Specialist Intern for our Pretrial Services team. By developing meaningful relationships with our participants through relatability and persistence the Peer Specialist role will meet the participants where they are with extensive services within the community. The Peer Specialist Intern will be expected to work collaboratively with the rest of the team to generate and implement ideas for effective engagement tactics to ensure the participant is compliant with the Supervised Release criteria. This role requires engagement with the participants both at the office and in the community.

Salary range: $550 Stipend
Shift Hours: Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm
Location Address: 4 West 125th Street, 4th Floor, NY, NY 10027
Workplace Flexibility: In person.
What you will be doing:
- Engagement of participants enrolled in pretrial services.
- Coordinate WRAP plans to assist colleagues in developing comprehensive assessments.
- Support and facilitate the transition of youth and adults with mental health or substance use challenges.
- Conduct needs assessments and identify suitable services.
- Facilitate linkage to income support and health insurance.
- Document progress notes in electronic records.
- Provide trauma-informed care and services.
- Deliver gender specific services.
- Plan and implement case management and peer support services targeting factors contributing to criminal recidivism.
- Intentionally use self-disclosure as a strategy to foster participant engagement and recovery.
- Provide crisis intervention services and effectively manage crises.
- Understand the legal framework of pretrial services.
- Deliver culturally competent services.
- Advocate for participants in accessing housing, income support, treatment, medical care, legal services and community resources.
- Implement the SOAR model (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery) to assist homeless clients in obtaining eligible income sources.
- Effectively utilize clinical supervision.
- Empower participants to understand and exercise their rights and responsibilities, ensuring their rights are protected.
- Apply motivational interviewing techniques in service delivery.
- Address risk factors for criminal recidivism to support participants in achieving recovery goals.
What we are looking for:
- High School Diploma, Equivalency degree, or completion of a Peer Training program.
- Candidates who are justice-impacted or identify as having lived experience in various support systems are encouraged to apply.
- Knowledge of community-based resources and support services for vulnerable individuals.
- Highly motivated self-starter, able to translate goals into action and deliver successful outcomes
Additional, preferred skills we are looking for but are not required:
- Experience with forensic, legal system or field-based mobile treatment teams strongly preferred.
