NYC Health + Hospitals is seeking a compassionate and empathetic Peer Counselor to join our team. As a Peer Counselor, you will work closely with consumers in emergency, inpatient, outpatient, home, and specialized settings to provide direct services and support.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist consumers with activities of daily living, such as budgeting, shopping, and socializing.
- Lead or co-lead groups on topics such as dual diagnoses, relapse and recovery, and socialization.
- Help consumers identify their own warning signs of relapse and develop individual coping strategies.
- Provide supportive peer counseling on mental health, substance abuse, rehabilitation strategies, and self-help opportunities.
- Participate in an interdisciplinary treatment and human services team to determine and implement a comprehensive plan of care.
- Clarify issues for consumers and assist with the process of referral for treatment, rehabilitation, housing, and supportive services.
- Supervise and instruct Peer Counselors in Assignments Levels I and II, volunteers, interns/students, and other related auxiliary staff.
- Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Counselor/Specialist Training Program.
- Certification as a Peer Specialist (NYCPS) issued by the Peer Specialist Certification Board.
- One (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of mental health services as a peer counselor/specialist, peer advocate, or in related human services.
