Title: Library and Literacy Teacher


Reports to: Director of Academic Affairs


Employment Information: Full time, 10-month bargaining unit position

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college/university in Deaf Education, Reading,
  • Linguistics, Literacy, Library Science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Possession of or eligibility for appropriate certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education is required.
  • Reading Specialist Certification preferred.
  • Communication competence in ASL and English.
  • At least five (5) years experience working with Deaf children of the age range to be served is preferred (Early Childhood, Elementary and/or Secondary).
  • Understanding bilingual Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students instructional needs.
  • Acceptance of communication principles which emphasize full accessibility to all forms of communication in the school environment, the importance of self-expression and the respect for each individual’s communication needs.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature appropriate for different age levels, including students with special needs in order to provide literature that meets the needs of our learners across the school community.
  • Understanding of and support for an exploratory, experiential approach to teaching and learning. Experience with an interdisciplinary curriculum.
  • Understanding and knowledge of normal child growth and development.
  • Understanding of and experience with a culturally diverse population.
  • Able to manage and perform all aspects of the daily library functions, including circulation, collection management, acquisitions, weeding, etc.
  • Ability to manage the library budget and meet all reporting requirements.
  • Experience working as a member of an instructional team is preferred. Able to work flexibly with a variety of colleagues, students, administration, and alumni.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Creative and resourceful.


Profile:

It is expected that teachers at PSD are up to date with current research and literature, not only in the education of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, but in education in general. They should exhibit a desire to learn, grow, and experiment. Teachers should be willing to put in the time necessary to appropriately plan/prepare for instruction, as well as attend professional workshops and seminars.

The Library & Literature Teacher is responsible for developing and conducting library class activities that promote the development of each student’s reading, writing, and communicative competence, as well as the skill of each student in accessing resources in the library.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct library classes at all school levels. The focus is specifically on exciting students about reading/writing and literature, and to connect the library and literacy activities with the students’ classrooms and curriculum.
  • Creatively utilize texts with a variety of levels and skill abilities, enthusiastic about sharing literature with all levels of readers, and able to collaborate with classroom staff.
  • Coordination, cataloging, and maintenance of the entire library collection, including the student library, professional library, and non-print materials in the collection (such as maps and various media materials).
  • Selecting and acquiring books, periodicals, and other materials that are appropriate for the general library collection and the professional collection.
  • Teach library skills to a wide range of students, including the use of the online catalogue and research skills.
  • Incorporate storytelling into Library & Literature classes, particularly with our youngest learners.
  • Getting books into the hands of our students through a free book give-away program (i.e. RIF), as well as through a Book Fair program in which students, families, and staff can purchase books (i.e. Scholastic Book Fair).
  • Working with the Coordinator of the Family Resource Center to establish a parent resource library and supporting activities to encourage literacy within the home.
  • Assist staff and the school community with finding various resources and filling their requests for materials and curriculum/program support.
  • Support the Extended School Year Programs and School Opening Preparations equalling a minimum of 3-5 days with supplemental pay during July-August.
  • Other duties as assigned.
