General Description of Position:

The Operating Room Surgical Technologist is responsible for applying sterile techniques, performing the duties of a scrub tech before, during, and after surgery, and understanding equipment usage to ensure patient safety and optimal surgical outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Preparation and Maintenance of Sterile Field:

    • Set up sterile fields according to the center's established policies.
    • Open, pass, and receive items in the sterile field correctly.
    • Scrub, gown, and glove for cases according to AORN standards and OrthoArkansas Surgery Center policies.
    • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of sterile technique principles.
    • Recognize and address breaks in sterile technique.

  2. Intraoperative and Postoperative Duties:

    • Assist the RN Circulator in facilitating room turnover between cases.
    • Wear appropriate attire when exposed to patient body fluids.
    • Operate sterilization equipment safely and accurately, complying with all federal and state regulations.
    • Demonstrate correct care, setup, use, cleaning, and handling of instrument trays.
    • Practice effective cost reduction techniques to minimize waste.
    • Restock ORs and identify supplies that need reordering.

  3. Data Management and Compliance:

    • Assist in gathering data for Performance Improvement (PI) studies, as assigned.
    • Practice correct disposal of sharps according to state and OSHA guidelines.
    • Enter statistical data into the computer for maintaining the required surgical log.
    • Utilize the MSDS manual and Hazardous Communication Plan appropriately.

  4. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Receive packages and handle deliveries.
    • Interact with surgeons regarding the pricing of new instruments and patient care.
    • Provide coverage in sterile processing, as assigned.
    • Communicate and collaborate effectively with all physicians and staff members to ensure patient safety.

  5. Patient Interaction:

    • Apply knowledge of age-based competencies when interacting with patients.

  6. Miscellaneous:

    • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Successful completion of an accredited surgical technician program.
    • 12 to 18 months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

    • Required: CPR certification.
    • Preferred: Surgical Technologist Certification.

  • Software Skills Required:

    • Basic skills in alphanumeric data entry, database management, and payroll systems.

This position requires a dedicated and detail-oriented individual with strong technical skills and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist will play a crucial role in supporting surgical teams and ensuring the efficient operation of the surgical suite.
