Job DescriptionJob DescriptionJob Title: Equipment Operator-Cemetery OperationsReports to: Crew Supervisor-CemeteryDepartment: Public Works Work Hours: 7:30 am – 4:00 pm weekdays; every other weekend; some evenings, and holidays.Starting Salary: $40,726 Annually DOQ (Non-Exempt)PLEASE NOTE: This position is for INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY (Current City of Decatur Employees)Purpose of Work:This position assists Decatur in managing growth while retaining character by creating a unique and comforting atmosphere for the City of Decatur’s cemetery. Work involves the management, maintenance, beautification, and operation of the City cemetery through the performance of heavy manual tasks, the safe operation of specialized tools, light, and heavy equipment in the maintenance of burial plots and preparation of gravesites. Detailed assignments are given by and work is performed under the direct supervision of the Crew Supervisor.Major Responsibilities:Leadership -Create a high performance work culture by demonstrating a positive attitude and modeling the City’s mission, vision, and values. Demonstrates, promotes, and develops leadership, management, and technical skills for self and other employees. Conducts self with high integrity, proactive in conserving city resources, and seeks and incorporates customer feedback for continuous improvement of operations.Effective Management -Follows all established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures, and carries out oral and written instructions with minimal supervision. Takes initiative to accomplish tasks and identifies opportunities for improvement. Provides responsive and timely feedback on status and progress of work assignments to supervisor and management.Teamwork -Creates an atmosphere of reliance and collaboration by building effective working relationships with supervisor, team members, city employees, etc. Demonstrates cooperation and initiative in helping team members, supervisor, and other city employees with developing and implementing programs and objectives to improve the department and City.Quality Service –Performs high quality services through the operation of a variety of motorized equipment and power tools such as an air compressor, chain saw, pole saw, and weed trimmer. Operates riding mowers, wood chipper, and backhoe. Able to read, locate, and mark grave sites using maps, monuments, and iron pins. Prepare and close grave sites in accordance with plans, specifications and/or verbal instructions. Drives dump truck for hauling debris, and assigned vehicles to transport personnel, tools, and materials to work sites. Plants trees and shrubbery; seed, mow, fertilize, water, and weed lawns; trimming trees; coordinate funeral activities with funeral directors and family members. In the absence of the Crew Supervisor will assist in making burial arrangements for persons interred at the Decatur Cemetery; maintains accurate and current records of deeds and all business transactions relative to burials; conducts research on gravesites, lot locations and availability for funeral services; shows lots to families and assists funeral home directors; Picks up and disposes of litter; empties trash cans. Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles; fuels and lubricates equipment; sharpens blades and replaces parts. May be called in to perform emergency services including the protection of property, repair of public facilities, and removal of debris. Performs duties of Supervisor in the absence of the Crew Supervisor. Performs other work as needed or assigned.Minimum Qualifications & Physical Requirements:HS Diploma or equivalent. Vocational or technical school training preferred. Valid State of Georgia driver's license (Class C) with a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR). Substantial work experience in performing comparable duties with similar equipment and tools. Ability to read and understand cemetery maps. Ability, knowledge, and skill in the use of hand and power tools, light and heavy equipment used in the maintenance of grounds and tree removal, proper pesticide and herbicide use and application. Knowledge and skill in the maintenance of power tools, light, and heavy equipment. Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures. Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (10-100 lbs.), bend, squat, twist, crawl, and climb on a daily basis. Ability to work in a variety of extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time, and available for emergency call-in on weekends, evenings, and holidays.All applications must be submitted online.
