The mission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is to spread the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. In the faithful pursuit of the mission, St. Augustine Catholic Church is seeking a Director of Evangelization and Discipleship. St. Augustine is located in the U Street neighborhood of Washington DC and is a large, vibrant parish. This role will assist the Pastor in the Parish’s mission of evangelization and the formation of missionary disciples by supporting and equipping parish leaders and parishioners. The Director of Evangelization and Discipleship will report to the Pastor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Pastor, staff, Parish Pastoral Council, and parish heads of ministries to implement the evangelizing mission of the parish; including assisting with needs assessment, pastoral planning, strategic planning, and a special emphasis on stewardship (e.g., time and talent) and personal discipleship.
  • Oversees parish evangelization initiatives and discipleship formation of parishioners and lay leaders.
  • Serves as the staff liaison to mentor and support the chairs of the five parish standing committees (1. Social Justice, 2. Family & Youth, 3. Worship & Church, 4. Catholic Education and 5. Hospitality) and serves as an ex-officio member of both the Parish Pastoral Council and the Administration & Planning Standing Committee.
  • Oversees the recruitment, training, formation, and mentorship of lay leaders in the parish, including the spiritual accompaniment and leadership development of ministry leaders.

(e.g., meeting facilitation and agenda building, consensus building and discernment process).

Evangelization and Discipleship

  • Oversee a parish-wide process of evangelization, inspired by Pope Francis’ vision of ministry that leads to an encounter with Jesus Christ, accompaniment into Christian community and the formation of missionary disciples.
  • Identify and implement programs and initiatives that teach, train and inspire parishioners to become missionary disciples.

Formation

  • Work with organizing committees to plan and implement parish retreats, small faith communities and other initiatives that provide discipleship formation opportunities for lay parishioners (e.g., Called & Gifted workshop, Alpha course, etc.).
  • Collaborate with the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program and other adult formation programs to promote an adult evangelizing catechesis with a particular focus on young adult ministry and outreach.
  • Collaborate with the Coordinator of Religious Education and School Principal in supporting family and youth evangelization and discipleship.
  • In coordination with the Administrative & Planning Committee, assist with the development and execution of an annual stewardship This includes assisting in the development and execution of a time & talent recruitment and support system and a volunteer appreciation program.
  • Discern, create and promote ways the parish can reach out in service to its own members and to those outside the parish community. This includes assisting in the development and establishment of a “newcomers” welcoming and orientation
  • Ensure that parishioners are trained to promote and serve in ministries of pastoral care to the sick and homebound (e.g. support to the Homebound Ministry).

Parish Administration

  • Collaborate with the Multimedia Ministry to enhance and standardize communication processes to ensure consistent and effective parish communication including the Sunday bulletin, Flock note, parish website, and other digital media.
  • Serve as the staff resource to the Parish Pastoral Council and Standing Committee Chairs as appropriate. This may include:
    1. Meeting regularly with Standing Committee Chairs to provide mentorship and
    2. Working with parish staff and Standing Committee Chairs to coordinate the calendaring process.
    3. Updating parish guidelines and procedures as needed (e.g., Stewardship Handbook for Pastoral Leaders, Handbook on Effective Ministries, ).

  1. Assisting in planning annual pastoral leadership orientation sessions and leadership retreats.
  2. Working with parish staff to ensure that ministry volunteers are in compliance with all Archdiocese of Washington Safe Environment guidelines
  • Represent the parish at community gatherings and with ecumenical and interreligious

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Candidate must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with a love for the Catholic faith and an understanding, appreciation, and articulation of the Pope Francis’ vision of
  • Collaborative leadership - ability and willingness to implement the vision of the pastor and work with ministry leaders and volunteers, particularly in the areas of evangelization and discipleship.
  • Strategic thinking and project management – discerning and understanding organization’s mission and focus, and how to contribute.
  • Mentorship of volunteers – developing the ability of others to contribute to the organization and accomplish its mission.
  • Cultural competence – ability to work with parishioners of various ages and from various cultural families and backgrounds.
  • Independence and flexibility – possessing a high level of initiative and commitment towards completing assignments with minimal supervision, while simultaneously adapting behavior or work methods in response to new information.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theology or equivalent formal training
  • Master’s Degree in Pastoral Ministry or Theology a plus
  • Experience in a Catholic parish, school, organization, or diocese related to one or more of the major duties and specific areas of responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of communication tools (Microsoft Office, database management, and digital media) and ability to use communication for engagement, formation and outreach.
  • Catholic pastoral ministry skills – knowledge of evangelization programs and resources, with ability to adapt resources to fit the needs of the parish to run retreats and small group
  • Catholic theological background - capacity to teach or develop a formation

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full time exempt role with required evenings and weekends
