Illume Fertility has a full-time position available for a Senior Embryologist. This is a exempt position reporting to the Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Director. A Level 2 Embryologist works under indirect supervision in performing assigned duties and responsibilities according to the specifications of Illume Fertility's protocols.

The Senior Embryologist must have clinical experience in Human Assisted Reproduction techniques to perform embryology laboratory services in accordance with Illume Fertility's Protocol Manuals.

The goal for the Embryology team is to carry out numerous laboratory procedures involving testing of and achieving pregnancy in infertile couples through IVF, IUI’s, micromanipulation and other related reproductive procedures. Must be very attentive to detail and record keeping.

Will do whatever needed, at whatever time, in whatever circumstances when necessary

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Medical Technology or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years experience as an Embryologist 1.
  • Andrology experience required.
  • General knowledge and operation of laboratory equipment. Exhibits no fear of technology or equipment that is malfunctioning or in need of repair.
  • Extensive computer literacy. Includes intermediate to advanced knowledge of all of the following: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Understanding of the Internet and e-mail is necessary.
  • Must satisfactorily complete on-the-job training provided within the Introductory Period, unless granted an extension.
  • Must complete any certification examinations within an appropriate timeframe required by accrediting bodies.
  • Must supply copies of degrees, certifications, training and transcripts for personnel files.

Level Two Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in laboratory operations and laboratory services including the following:
  • Preparation and Portioning of culture media
  • Culture dish preparation
  • Sperm preparation for IUI and IVF
  • Semen analysis with strict morphology
  • Sperm cryopreservation, storage, and thawing
  • Epididymal/Testicular sperm processing for IVF
  • Oocyte identification
  • Conventional Insemination
  • Hyaluronidase treatment of oocytes
  • ICSI (Intra-cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) Insemination
  • Fertilization check
  • Embryo culture and grading
  • Assisted Hatching with Laser
  • Embryo culture and grading
  • Assisted Hatching with Laser
  • Embryo transfer
  • Embryo discard
  • Embryo cryopreservation and thaw
  • Embryo vitrification and warm
  • IVF instrument preparation.
  • Recording and reporting laboratory results.
  • Equipment maintenance
  • QC of media, instruments and other disposable materials. Patient Interaction
  • Teaching/Training of new personnel
  • Patient Communication
  • Work to develop a proficiency in the following:
  • Embryo biopsy and blastomere fixation and/or PCR preparation
  • Blastocyst biopsy and trophectoderm PCR preparation
  • Oocyte vitrification and warm
  • Participate in laboratory proficiency testing programs as directed by the laboratory manager.
  • Maintain inventory at acceptable levels for all laboratory areas, including andrology and embryology.
  • Organize and maintain accurate records, including patients test reports, IVF related procedures (IVF cycles, embryo freezing and thawing records) and invoices related to purchase of inventory.
  • Interpret and analyze test results performed in the laboratory in a timely manner when reporting to physicians.
  • Expect to respond to any problems arising with laboratory equipment that may occur during the night and or weekends.
  • All lab equipment, supplies and facilities must be clean and well organized at all times.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills in spreadsheets, word processing, database development, e-mail, Internet access, computer networks, intra-office communications are necessary.

Team Effort:

  • Work cooperatively with a multidisciplinary team to provide good patient care, while meeting the objectives and goals of the practice.
  • Attend practice and department meetings as requested.
  • Work weekends and holidays as scheduled, inclusive of on-call responsibilities.
    • Assist the financial department in assuring appropriate and timely billing for testing services.
    • Act as a liaison between the laboratory and other departments within the office to disseminate information and communicate areas for continual quality improvement.

Professional Development:

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications.
  • Keep abreast of the latest research, evaluate and initiate new procedures to enhance the capabilities of the lab.
  • Initiate research projects including submission of abstracts for review for possible oral or poster presentations.
  • Attend professional meetings to maintain peer networks and keep abreast of new technologies and research.

Physical Attributes Needed:

  • Physical activity, such as bending, lifting and climbing are necessary to adequately perform daily duties.
  • Fluency in the English language is necessary to properly and clearly communicate with staff and patients.
