Position Overview:

Newport Craft is seeking an experienced Head Brewer to lead our brewing and cellar operations at our Newport, Rhode Island facility. The Head Brewer will oversee all aspects of production, from wort creation to final cellaring, ensuring the highest quality of beer and efficiency in the brewing process. This role is critical in guiding recipe development, driving process improvements, and maintaining production standards. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of hands-on brewing expertise and leadership skills to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and Oversee Brewing Operations: Manage all brewing tasks, including operation of a brand new semi-automated 60-bbl brewhouse, centrifuge, yeast propagation tank, and CIP skid, while ensuring adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Oversee Cellar Operations: Develop, maintain, and follow cellaring processes and procedures to ensure the production of high-quality products.
  • Recipe Development: Collaborate with the Production Manager to develop new recipes, refine existing ones, and implement alternative techniques.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and execute improvements in production efficiency and quality control.
  • Production Management: Record production and batch data using brand sheets and EKOS, while ensuring accurate documentation and reporting.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor and guide the brew/cellar team, promoting a positive work environment focused on cooperation, teamwork, and respect.
  • Quality Assurance: Maintain rigorous standards for cleanliness and safety in all brewing and cellar areas.
  • Customer Engagement: Participate in customer-facing activities such as tours, client visits, and events, sharing knowledge and passion for our products.
  • Raw Material Sourcing: Execute the sourcing of raw materials used in the production of beer, ensuring high quality and cost-effective procurement.
  • Supply Chain Coordination: Operate a forklift to move pallets of supplies, equipment, and product, ensuring seamless production flow.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a production brewery, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Formal brewing education, training, certifications, or accreditations are highly desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of the brewing process, including malt milling, brewhouse, and cellar equipment.
  • Proven ability to lead a team with a positive disposition, strong work ethic, and excellent time-management skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Experience in customer engagement and a passion for sharing industry knowledge.
  • Comfort with operating a box truck and forklift (certification can be provided).
  • Understanding of industrial safety/compliance standards is a plus.
  • High School Diploma or GED required; a valid Driver’s License is also required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
