Definition:

Conservators provide interventive treatment to stabilize and repair the most significant documents from the State Archives and local government offices - primarily 19th and 20th century paper records (documents, maps, and books), with occasional stabilization of photographs. The primary work is in conservation treatment; secondary tasks include preventative conservation, outreach and training.

Conservation Techs assist Conservators in carrying out essential conservation treatments on, primarily, book and paper-based items. This requires performing a variety of diverse and detailed tasks, working independently within established practices, under the direct supervision of the Conservators and the general supervision of the Director of Local Records

Job Functions and General Responsibilities:

  • Conservation Tech: Perform standard conservation treatments including, but not limited to:
    • Dry surface cleaning
    • Humidification and flattening
    • Removal of adhesives, backings, fasteners, old mends
    • Mending and backing/lining
    • Mold remediation
  • Conservator: Perform ethical conservation treatments at varying degrees of complexity;
    • Evaluation of documents, maps, books, and other related materials, including necessary physical and chemical testing, to determine treatment needs;
    • Develop condition reports and treatment proposals, including photo documentation, for work proposed and performed, using established procedures;
    • Perform all treatments in accordance with the American Institute for Conservation's Code of Ethics and supervisor directions.
  • Maintain written and photographic documentation of conservation treatments performed.
  • Assist in maintaining the lab as a clean and safe working environment.
  • Perform conservation support activities such as tracking and receiving supplies.
  • Training: Occasionally provide training for in-house staff, volunteers, and interns regarding: safe handling procedures, holdings maintenance procedures, etc.
  • Outreach: On occasion, provide information and education to outside groups
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent manual dexterity using tools such as scissors, knives, brushes and adhesives.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain quality of work when doing repetitive tasks.
  • Familiarity with photo-editing software and digital photography.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach shelves above eye level, lift and carry 40 lbs., and climb a ladder to retrieve materials
  • Ability to tolerate records containing dust and mold spores
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel, including occasional overnight trips.

Qualifications:

  • All Candidates: Must possess a valid Missouri driver's license or be able to secure one within 30 days of employment
  • Conservator Technician:
    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Background in laboratory science, art, art history, history, and/or cultural heritage preservation, is helpful.
    • Interest in book and paper conservation and/or archives preservation is preferred
    • Knowledge of basic chemistry and laboratory safety
  • Conservator:
    • Minimum: At least 2 years advanced training in conservation acquired through formal studies or a combination of apprenticeship, advanced courses, and internships. Knowledge of the chemical and physical properties of books/paper and an understanding of the causes of deterioration.
    • Preferred: Advanced degree/certificate in paper conservation through an accredited graduate or equivalent certificate program, formal apprenticeship, or equivalent experience OR Master's degree in library science or archival administration, art, art history, history, historical preservation, or related field, with one year of experience in paper conservation. Sound knowledge of organic and physical chemistry.
