What is this job?

The Behavior Intervention Specialist is a hands-on position responsible for supporting the school by responding to and managing crisis situations within the building, across campus, and in the community as needed, as well as overseeing the use of resource rooms and the Alternative Structured Classroom. This position is also responsible for collaborating with the Coordinator of Behavior in order to develop, master, and model implementation of individualized behavior intervention plans for students.

What is the Strawbridge School?

The Strawbridge School is a non-public school approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The program provides small, caring classroom settings guided by certified special education teachers.

The school serves youth with emotional, behavioral, and/or intellectual challenges in a supportive and nurturing environment. Our team addresses the unique educational needs of students who have been unable to thrive in a public-school setting. The Strawbridge School is one of several programs provided by Everstand, a national children and family-focused charity headquartered in Baltimore.

What does this job do specifically?

  • Model and act in accordance with Everstand’s core values.
  • Demonstrate and practice trauma informed leadership.
  • Respond to staff requests for assistance in managing crises.
  • Carry a caseload of students for whom you will manage behavioral data, write IEP goals and objectives in related areas, write Behavior Intervention Plans, and ensure the implementation of those plans by classroom staff.
  • Ensure that following a restraint, the child is seen by the Nurse.
  • Complete serious incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate understanding of roles of other personnel in the team approach setting.
  • Assess potential crisis situations involving both individuals and groups and utilize necessary resources to de-escalate and/or defuse these situations.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to crises, at times requiring the use of physical restraint, using the least restrictive intervention necessary to de-escalate the situation.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with cultural pattern existing within a community that may affect the behavior of students.
  • Provide ongoing supervision of students in the resource room.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of human development, including understanding of the factors that contribute to dysfunctional behavior.
  • Support the Coordinator of Behavior Intervention and Support with serious incident report routing, data collection, student observation, or other applicable tasks.
  • Obtain and maintain certification as a “user” in Everstand’s electronic health record software system, Cx360.

What experience and education do I need?

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human resource field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Four years’ experience in the field.
