Inspector

Position Summary

Identifies and verifies required maintenance work, interprets contract, schedules, and coordinates sub-contractor work, and ensures work meets contract specifications. Ensure all aspects of the contract are coordinated and completed in a timely, efficient, effective, and profitable manner. Carries out audits and report findings to the Maintenance Planner as required to verify compliance of the contract operations with the contract and the contract Work Plan. This position reports to the project Maintenance Planner.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs condition assessment of pavements, signs, guardrails, tunnels, bridges, drainage systems, fencing, vegetation, and other infrastructure as needed.
  • Schedules and coordinates work to be performed.
  • Assists Maintenance Planner to determine best approach (self-performance or sub-contract) for bringing assets into contract compliance considering cost, timelines, and efficiency.
  • Ensure persons completing project work have a clear understanding of the Maintenance Quality Assessment (MQA) requirements.
  • Inspects in-process and completed work to ensure compliance with contract requirements and performance standards.
  • Identifies opportunities for changes and improvements in work methods, processes, efficiency and cost reduction.
  • Completes inspections of guard rails, attenuators, and signs.
  • Identifies all MQA failures.
  • Responsible for accurate, timely completion, and entry of work reporting and timesheets.
  • Assist the Maintenance Planner by ensuring up-to-date copies of relevant documents are available at the workplace.
  • Prepares other reports and correspondence as necessary.
  • Enters data into the proper systems to communicate and document the work plan before, during, and after operations.
  • Assists and monitors routine work plan activities such as traffic control and maintenance work.
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Avoids legal challenges by complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
  • Inspectors are required to lead by example, encourage co-workers, and supervised employees to correctly use PPE, follow proper safety rules of within your area of supervised responsibility.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply contractual document requirements and performance expectations.
  • Be able to perform basic math functions and calculations (add, subtract, multiply divide, and calculate proportions, percentages, measurements, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to multi-task with accuracy, work independently with attention to detail and organization.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with an ability to communicate to all levels of management.
  • General clerical and office administration skills.
  • Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced changing environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • 3+ years work experience in construction and/or road maintenance (Required)
  • Valid driver's license required and a good driving record to drive company vehicle. (Required)
  • DOT Certifications (Highly Desirable)
Work Conditions/Physical Demands

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to traffic and outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places; fume or airborne particles. Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, frequent exposure to insects and infrequent exposure to reptiles/rodents. The noise level in the work environment usually moderate but on occasion can be more than moderate.

Physical Demands:

The employee is regularly required to stand; sit; walk on a wide range of surfaces; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. Use manual and powered pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and electric powered tools and equipment. Vision abilities include both close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to pass fit test for respirator as required. Ability to work at heights. Ability to work in confined spaces.
