Salary: $32,930

Your day as a Peer Recovery Specialist I

As a Peer Recovery Specialist I at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will play a crucial role in supporting pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorder in our SEFP comprehensive residential program. Your responsibilities will include providing peer support, advocating for consumers, and offering various support functions to assist individuals in their recovery journey. You will work within a person-centered treatment environment, promoting stabilization and well-being for women and their families through a holistic approach to intervention and support. By linking individuals to necessary services, teaching essential life skills, and fostering successful community living, you will contribute significantly to the overall health and recovery of the individuals in our care.

Additionally, being able to work collaboratively as part of a team, demonstrate a commitment to personal recovery, and maintain composure in high-pressure situations are all critical traits for thriving in this position.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's) for this role include the ability to provide peer support from the perspective of someone who has received mental health services. Essential skills involve establishing supportive, trusting relationships with individuals experiencing mental illness and substance use disorders, while respecting their rights and personal preferences. Professional interaction with program participants, peers, and collateral agencies is required. Strong oral and written communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to operate safely in the workplace. The role demands participation as a team member, good listening skills, and the capability to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies to support self-directed recovery. Commitment to personal recovery, the ability to function calmly under stress, acknowledgment of personal strengths and limitations, and effective communication, both orally and in writing, are also essential.
