Requirements:

  • Staff Supervision and Development: Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate aquatic staff, including lifeguards, swim instructors, and other aquatic personnel. Provide ongoing professional development and training.
  • Risk Management and Safety: Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive risk management plans and safety procedures to ensure a safe environment for all members, staff, and visitors.
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response: Develop and implement emergency response plans for aquatic facilities. Conduct regular drills and training sessions for staff.
  • Policy Development and Enforcement: Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures related to aquatic operations and risk management. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Program Operations and Management: Oversee the implementation, operations, and evaluation of all aquatic programs to ensure they meet the community's needs and align with YMCA standards.
  • Program Evaluation and Improvement: Regularly assess program effectiveness through surveys, feedback, and performance metrics. Make data-driven decisions to enhance program quality and outcomes.
  • Program Expansion and Innovation: Identify opportunities for new programs and services that meet emerging community needs and trends. Lead the development and implementation of innovative initiatives.
  • Budget Management: Prepare, manage, and monitor the aquatic department budget, ensuring financial sustainability and efficiency. Oversee revenue generation and cost control measures.
  • Facility Maintenance: Ensure the aquatic facilities are maintained to the highest standards, including regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs. Coordinate with the facility director, maintenance staff and external vendors as needed.
  • Community Engagement and Partnerships: Build and maintain strong relationships with community organizations, schools, and local agencies to promote aquatic programs and safety initiatives.
  • Member Services and Retention: Ensure high levels of member satisfaction and retention by providing exceptional customer service and addressing member concerns promptly and effectively.
  • Marketing and Promotion: Collaborate with the marketing team to promote aquatic programs and services through various channels, including social media, newsletters, and community events.
  • Professional Development and Networking: Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes by participating in professional development opportunities and networking with other aquatic professionals.
  • Collaboration with YMCA Leadership: Work closely with YMCA executive leadership and other department heads to ensure alignment of aquatic programs with the overall mission and goals of the organization. Contribute to strategic planning and organizational development initiatives.

Work Environment:

  • Use of a computer for extended periods of time and communication using a computer and phone/smart device.
  • Sitting, reaching, and ability to move around the work environment.
  • Occasional lifting up to 50+ pounds.
  • Use of vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.

Required Education, Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Recreation, Health/Fitness, Exercise Physiology, or equivalent experience. Master degree in Recreation Management or related field, preferred.
  • Minimum five years of related experience in aquatic management in the YMCA, Parks and Recreation, JCC, or similar nonprofit.
  • Required Certifications: Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, First Aid and CPR.
  • Preferred certifications include: Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Waterpark or Swift Water Rescue, and Certified Pool Operator (CPO).
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal, public relations and communications skills, including the ability to make presentations and handle media inquiries.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Superior time management efficiency with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Computer literacy skills and experience with standard business operations systems and membership database systems.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Possession of Spanish language both written and spoken.
