JOB SUMMARY
The Peer Specialist provides assistance and guidance to clients so that they can achieve their highest potential in all life skills. Carries out duties associated with the evidence-based model of Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Supported Employment by helping clients obtain and sustain employment that is consistent with their vocational goals. The Peer Support Specialist will use his/her lived experience and knowledge to mentor to those members who set employment as a goal. Provide assistance and guidance to participants so that participants can achieve their highest potential in all life skills. Use his/her unique life and recovery experiences to mentor participants and link them with additional support services, including behavioral health providers, housing support, and other basic needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES

• Engages, supports, and encourages participants and establishes trusting, collaborative relationships directed towards the goal of competitive employment in integrated job settings.
• Serves as a mentor to clients, and families to promote empowerment and hope, and while drawing on own experiences as a consumer to build trust and commonality, provides peer counseling and support.
• Provides expertise and consultation to other staff members from a mental health consumer perspective in order to enhance empathy and professional effectiveness.
• Provides education and support to clients about stigma and ways to combat it, and advocates for clients by educating about grievance or complaint procedures.
• Provides education and support to family members.
• Serves as liaison between the team and consumer-run programs, and encourages clients’ use of these.
• Provides ongoing ‘side-by-side’ services related to skills development, including accessing community resources to address basic needs, behavioral and physical health needs. Provides case management services.
• Transports clients in personal vehicle as required.
• Provides outreach services to clients, as necessary, when there appears to be disengagement from IPS services. If necessary, maintains some contact with clients even without a vocational focus to sustain engagement.
• Provides hands on support to participants to support them with accessing technology resources in the program’s tech resource lab
• Meets regularly with team members to assist with vocational services.
• Consistently engages and involves clients in all aspects of the program.
• Work as part of a team and displays a positive attitude, professional relationship, and respect towards clients and staff.
• Works with clients on life skills as needed while maintaining distinction between therapeutic and social relationships.
• Maintains information tracking system as directed by the Program Manager.
• Aids in general management of center including running errands as assigned.
• Completes all assigned duties within the time frame and in accordance with the standards as established by the Program Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Peer Specialist Certification preferred.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Life experience in mental health or SUD recovery or family and willingness to disclose required.
• Valid CA driver’s license and current auto insurance per contract requirements required.
• Cultural competency understanding required. Bilingual preferred.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and EHR software preferred.
