The John Cooper School is seeking an Assistant Director of Instrumental Music for the 2024-2025 school year.

The John Cooper School, located in The Woodlands, TX, on a beautiful 40-acre campus with a total enrollment of 1,300 students, is an independent, coeducational college preparatory day school serving students in Prekindergarten through Grade 12.

The Assistant Director of Instrumental Music works closely with the Director of Instrumental Music in the development of the Band program at the John Cooper School. Beginning in 5th grade, the Instrumental music program is an ensemble-based program consisting of 5th grade band, 6th grade band, MS Band (7/8th Grade) and the Upper School Wind ensemble. This position teaches 4 sections of ensembles, as well as maintains an extensive inventory of instruments and music for the program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with and “Team Teach” all band classes grades 5 through 12.
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining a culture of excellence and expectation of achievement in instrumental music.
  • Assist in developing rubrics and assessments for evaluation and grading of students at all levels of development.
  • Assist with coordination of adjunct/private lesson faculty, lecturers, and clinicians
  • Assist with managing budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Assist with maintaining current inventory including instruments, uniforms, and sheet music.
  • Assist with all-region/all-state band entry and supervise while attending honor ensembles.
  • Coordinates with Director of Instrumental music to ensure representation at divisional meetings.
  • Supports all educational activities the musicians in the program are involved in, including special events, football/pep band games, Spirit week activities and other events occurring on campus and in the community.
  • Participates in school-supported professional development.

Job Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Instrumental Music or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience; independent school experience preferred.
  • Strong commitment to students’ progress, success, and social-emotional well-being.
  • Commitment to student-centered pedagogies and authentic assessments.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in all levels of education, from Elementary through Upper School.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues--a team player.
  • Openness to and enthusiasm for learning and professional growth.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Able to stand and teach 80 minute classes.
  • Able to carry and lift 50 lbs, as well as setup and tear down classroom equipment (chairs and stands)
