About the Park School
The Park School is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school in Brookline, MA dedicated to excellence in education. Park's faculty encourages each student to strive for intellectual, physical, and moral growth and to become contributing members of the community.
The Lower Division Permanent Substitute teacher is a member of the school’s Lower Division and reports to the Lower Division Head. This full-time, 10-month position comes with the responsibility of working with faculty and staff to be available for both planned and unplanned teacher absences for class and duties where needed, in support of the school’s mission and curricular goals.
Responsibilities
- Available and on campus during school hours (7:45 am - 4:45 pm) to fulfill any predetermined or as-needed coverage requirements
- Responsible for end-of-school-day bus monitoring duty
- Collaborate with teachers to fully understand, plan, and implement lesson plans while the teacher is absent, including preparation outside of classroom time
- Attendance at mandatory meetings is required
- Collaboration, flexibility, a nurturing disposition, and a love of working with children are essential
- Respectfully engage with a diverse community and ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are emphasized as a core value of the School
- Effective and respectful class management skills, an understanding of the social/emotional development of children, team-oriented and possess an exceptional work ethic
- Helping with recess, lunch, and other duties in the Division when available
- Opportunities to participate in other areas, such as athletic coaching or working with our After School Program, are available
- Establish and implement expectations for student safety, conduct, procedures, and routines consistent with Park School policies.
- Participate in the school community, including faculty and committee work, weekly school duties, and activities.
- Meet expectations as defined by the Park School Employee Essential Expectations
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Experience with working with elementary-aged children
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with students, colleagues, and other adults
- Experience in writing student comments and other school-related documents
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in teaching and learning & experience in working in a culturally diverse community.
- Motivation for and interest in professional development
- Ability to think independently along with being collaborative in a team environment
- Skill in differentiating instruction
- High integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Maintain focus, adaptability, and composure in an energetic and, at times, loud environment
- Effectively interpret, navigate, mediate, and resolve conflict with students and families in a timely manner.
- The ability to hold meetings in person and via supported video conference tools (i.e. Zoom or Google Meet)
- Proficient in learning Google tools and other applications adopted by the school, such as Veracross, SchoolPass, Atlas, etc.
Physical Requirements:
- The ability to sit and stand uninterrupted for 30-minute periods of time.
- The ability to traverse on and across variable surfaces (e.g. level flooring, stairs, turf, gravel, asphalt, etc.).
- Ability to lead, supervise, and accompany students to all areas of the school campus (including all indoor and outdoor areas), including during day-to-day responsibilities and in case of emergency.
- The ability to position oneself (e.g., stand, sit, crouch, and kneel down) to support students.
- The ability to work outdoors, year-round, in variable weather conditions.
- The ability to lift and hold 15 lbs overhead.
- The ability to occasionally transport (e.g., move or drag) 25 lbs
