This on-site position is located in our Nashville, Tennessee office.

About Our Office

The Office of the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury is responsible for the audit of state and local governmental entities and participates in the general financial and administrative management and oversight of state government. The Office is led by Comptroller Jason E. Mumpower, a constitutional officer who is elected by the Tennessee General Assembly.

Position

The Comptroller of the Treasury is recruiting for a full-time Auditor: Financial/TennCare position in the Division of State Audit’s Tenncare/Medicaid Section.  This position is responsible for performing examinations in accordance with attestation standards established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and conducting desk reviews, which involve obtaining financial and statistical data from providers and determining accuracy and reasonableness of the information submitted to our office. Responsibilities may include examining, analyzing, and reviewing records, financial statements, claims data, and cost reports for providers participating in the TennCare Program. 

This position also performs other related duties as assigned.

Major Responsibilities will include:

  • Producing high quality work and take ownership of the various desk reviews, audit tasks or assigned projects. Work well individually and in a team environment.
  • Developing neat, concise, logical, and well-supported working papers that comply with auditing standards and best practices.
  • Performing quality data analyses that accurately support the audit opinion and findings with proper perspective.
  • Contributing to a results-oriented culture through active participation in meetings and collaboration with coworkers.
  • Ensuring that written and verbal communications are clear and easily understood by all stakeholders, such as the General Assembly, the Division of TennCare, local governing bodies, elected officials, the media, citizens of the State of Tennessee, and the federal government.
  • Seeking opportunities for innovation and increased efficiency to improve and support the office’s mission to make government work better.
  • Effectively using the auditee’s time and professionally representing the Comptroller’s Office.

Legislative Auditors may assist in:

  • Conducting Desk Reviews and Examinations of the cost reports of Nursing Facilities, Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) facilities, Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Clinics
  • Calculating cost settlements for state-operated Developmental Centers serving individuals with intellectual disabilities
  • Computing reimbursement settlements and prospective rates for Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Clinics as required by the Benefits Improvement and Protection Act of 2000
  • Providing technical, financial, and budgeting support to the Division of TennCare
  • Examining TennCare Managed Care Contractors (MCCs), who contract with the state to provide medical services under the program, performed jointly with the Department of Commerce and Insurance
  • Complying with laws, regulations, and contracts 
  • Analyzing data to determine accuracy and trends.

Education and Experience

Financial/TennCare auditors are required to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting. Completed coursework or experience in data analytics is preferred.  

Candidates should note that while a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license (requiring 30 semester hours in accounting) is not required for employment, it is strongly encouraged for further advancement as an auditor in our office.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform each major responsibility.  A successful employee in this role possesses the abilities to learn quickly, pay attention to detail, ensure accuracy, apply logic, think critically and problem solve, and produce high-quality results. Auditors should be adaptable and possess the ability to deal tactfully with the auditee, coworkers, and others. Auditors must be able to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions, and to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly.

Travel

Financial/TennCare audits may require some travel on a seasonal basis. Overnight stays for audits are generally confined to Monday through Wednesday evenings depending on the ability of the auditee to accommodate the required work hours.
