JOB SUMMARY:

The Law Clerk assists the Judges in performing various legal work, which involves research, analysis and legal writing. In addition, the Law Clerk performs other related work as assigned by the Judge. The Law Clerk’s work is reviewed by the Judges to ensure accuracy and correctness.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides legal research support to the Judges and court personnel on dependency, delinquency, CHINS and/or administrative matters for which the Judge seeks assistance.

Prepares orders, legal memorandums, briefs, pleadings, and related documents, reviews and discusses points of law with Judges and Attorneys.

At the Judges request, tests theories presented by Attorneys and reviews laws on specific subjects.

Attends, at the Judge’s request, court activities, consulting with the assigned Judge and other Judges and Attorneys.

Reviews and analyzes various motions.

Maintains current knowledge of legislation and developments for application to areas of responsibility.

Attends staff and other professional meetings as required to exchange information; attends technical or professional workshops or seminars to improve professional skills.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

Juris Doctorate Degree required.

Licenses and Certifications:

None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough and sound knowledge of law and research procedures

Basic knowledge of the juvenile justice system, especially the court system

Good practical, analytical legal research and writing abilities

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to apply sound research concepts.

Ability to research, analyze, and digest legal facts and precedents.

Ability to comprehend and follow oral written instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain loyal, trusting relationships with associates, superiors, and subordinates.

Ability to recognize the importance of confidentiality.

ADA Minimum Qualifications:

Physical Ability: Essential functions of this position continuously require the ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing); operate a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copier, and printer. Incumbents must continuously be able to think analytically; handle stress and emotion, concentrate on tasks, remember names and other details; examine and observe details; make decisions, and adjust to change. Incumbents must also continuously direct others; meet deadlines; stay organized; use math/calculations and use a keyboard/type.

Essential Functions frequently require the ability to move about inside the office; and move/transport items up to 10lbs.

Essential functions occasionally require the ability to bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs, and twisting at the waist, hips or knees; reach overhead; push or pull; and repetitively use hands/arms/legs. Incumbents in this position are occasionally required to be on-call and work irregular hours.

Sensory Requirements: Essential functions regularly require the ability to use effective verbal and written communication; and use of hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation to use equipment.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions of this position continuously require the ability to either work with others or work alone.
